YUCCA VALLEY SEWER SYSTEM COSTS GO DOWN

With changes in sizes of pipes, the numbers and sizes of manhole covers, and project and construction management costs, the estimate for the Yucca Valley sewer project’s final cost has changed again. Managing editor Tami Roleff says the total cost of the wastewater project has decreased slightly…
With the Yucca Valley sewer project design 95 percent complete, the Hi-Desert Water District Board of Directors received an update on the cost estimates at its special meeting Wednesday night. The engineering firm has changed sizes of the pipes, number and sizes of sewer manhole covers, and the road paving costs, which resulted in a total estimate reduction of $4.2 million. However, incidentals like project management and construction management have increased by $7.75 million. But, the cost to finance the project is estimated to decrease by nearly $4 million, resulting in a total cost reduction of nearly $422,000. The new estimated cost that property owners will be asked to approve in an assessment vote this spring is $145,229,718. The District’s request for a 1 percent—or lower—loan is expected to be on the State Water Resources Control Board’s agenda in March, after which ballots will be mailed to residents to approve the assessment district. The first phase of the sewer project would not be completed before 2018, at the earliest.
