SCHOOL BOARD HEARS FROM SOLAR VENDORS

In recent months, an ad hoc committee of volunteers created a request for proposal for solar energy generation in the Morongo Unified School District. The committee received responses from 9 vendors, and whittled that list down to three. Reporter Dan Stork reports what happened when the final three made their cases to the Board of Educationā€¦

Three vendors of solar power generation systems made pitches to the Morongo Unified School District Board of Education. All proposed to construct and run solar energy installations at school sites.
NextEra, which would partner with RGS Energy, emphasized its financial hugeness. PSOmas FMG highlighted its dedication to the educational sector, including the curricula it has developed for use in the schools, particularly in southern California, and most particularly in the Hi-Desert. Sunpower, unlike the other two vendors, is vertically integratedā€”it makes its own panels. It claimed technological superiority for its installations. All vendors addressed questions about educational programs, USA manufacture of components, use of local labor, employee screening, safety, and maintenance and operations. Following the vendor presentations, financial consultant James Mizokawa compared the estimated costs and savings of each proposal over the next 20 years. Savings ranged from about $3.4 million for PSOmas FMG to $9 million for one of the two Sunpower rate schedules. The Board decided to wait until its October 21 meeting to select a vendor. Regardless of who is selected, the installations are expected to be up and running in October 2015.

Correction: Ā In the original version of this story, NextEra was incorrectly identified as NetEnergy.
