ONE IN CUSTODY AFTER MORONGO VALLEY STABBING MURDER

A suspect is in custody after a man was stabbed to death Saturday afternoon in Morongo Valley. According to Sheriff’s Sergeant James Porter, 911 received a call at 4:16 p.m. saying a Ford pick-up truck was parked on North Star Trail, just east of Big Morongo Road, with a male lying on the ground behind it in a pool of blood. The victim, a 75-year-old Morongo Valley resident, had been stabbed multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:45 p.m. Deputies received a tip that led them to arrest Chad Leyburn, 28, at his residence in the 52000 block of Mecca Road in Morongo Valley. Chad Leyburn was arrested for investigation of murder, booked at the Morongo Basin Jail, and is being held without bail. The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The victim was a retired man who was called “The Mayor”. He looked after everyones property and was harmless. I was told he saw this subject and stopped to see if he needed help.
He was a good man and a good neighbor. He will be missed.

Makes me so sad. This old man should have been able to live his life and he came in contact with evil. I wonder if the murderer was on meth or other drugs.

The victim was a definite friend to his neighbors in Big Morongo Canyon area. He would watch out for all. If he heard any kind of commotion he would investigate it and report it as necesary to homeowners or other authorities. Always remembering all at Christmas time by hand carrying cards. Always helping out! He is missed by all.

There is something going on that is very strange, the man arrested for the murder was one of my SGTs in the marine corps and i believe I knew him very well. I could never see Chad doing that. They also have arrested him on a “tip” his family is raising money to be able to provide him a good defense.
