COURT REJECTS APPEAL OF FORMER DERRY CHIEF OF STAFF
The Fourth District Court of Appeals in Riverside has rejected an appeal by former assistant assessor and former Chief of Staff for Supervisor Derry, Jim Erwin to have the County District Attorney's Office recused from his criminal case. A judge in November rejected Erwin's motion to recuse the District Attorney's Office, finding that the motion was based largely on heresay and speculation. The judge also rejected Erwin's request for an evidentiary hearing to try and show a number of conflicts of interest between Erwin's case and District Attorney Michael A. Ramos. Erwin faces 10 felony counts of perjury and filing false records in relation to gifts he received from a developer. District Attorney Ramos has limited his public comment due to the ongoing corruption probe. His office released this statement: It was the position of this Office from the outset that the recusal motion had no merit in law or fact. We are gratified that the Fourth District Court of Appeal has denied the petition."

With more on this year’s Christmas Bird Count in Joshua Tree National Park, here is Park Ranger Pat Pilcher...
Attention bird lovers and volunteers: your expertise and enthusiasm are needed for the upcoming Joshua Tree National Park Christmas Bird Count. The count begins at 7:00 am on Monday, January 1. Participants of all skill levels of birding are encouraged to attend. The National Audubon Society sponsors the event that attracts 50,000 observers each year throughout the nation. Volunteers who participate in the bird count add to the understanding of winter birds and local population trends. By finding out what’s going on with the birds, we also learn about the environment as a whole. For the Joshua Tree bird count, inexperienced birders will be partnered with veteran birders. Territories for the count are mapped out ahead so participants know where to start the morning of the count. Volunteer birders should be prepared for an all day event in the field.
