There were no injuries when a small plane crashed Saturday morning in the Johnson valley area. Sheriff’s investigators say Pilot Joshua Stice was attempting to land the single engine aircraft at an airstrip near Valley Vista and Cholla Roads Shortly before noon. Stice said he was trying to land on a North-South runway and was caught in a crosswind. He added power to the aircraft, attempted to lift off and traveled about 1000 southeast off the runway. The front wheel hit a rock and soft sand and the plane flipped over coming to rest upside down. Stice was not injured. Investigators said alcohol or drugs were not a factor in the crash.

SAY GOODBYE TO THOSE FRONT YARD DUMPSTERS IN TWENTYNINE PALMS
Say goodbye to those front yard dumpsters in Twentynine Palms. The City is addressing issues that contribute to unsightliness. One of those is commercial trash bins, dumpsters, placed on single-family residential lots. Because residential properties of less than an acre do not have room for a dumpster, they have frequently been placed in front yards or in the public right of way, where they create an unsightly condition, restrict parking, and sometimes present a dangerous obstacle to vehicles. According to the City’s contract with Burrtec Waste and Recycling Services, Commercial Trash Bins may only be allowed on single-family residential properties in excess of one acre in size, or on properties that are zoned Rural Living. To rectify the situation, the City has issued a letter to inform residents that Burrtec will begin removing the dumpsters January 15. The good new is while some residential customers may lose their dumpsters, they will also no longer have to pay for commercial trash service, They will be issued standard 96-gallon Refuse and Recycling Carts for a lower cost. Residents also have the option to request additional carts, or carts of various sizes. Bulky Item pick-up Service is available to single-family dwellings for no charge four times a year. Temporary Commercial Trash Bins will still be available from Burrtec for larger clean-up projects. A public meeting has been scheduled for Saturday, December 12, at 10 a.m. at the Community Center on Joe Davis Drive, to answer questions and concerns from residents. For more information, contact Gary Blackman at Twentynine Palms City Hall, (760) 367-6799.

MORE PEOPLE DRIVING THIS THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY
More Southern Californians are expected to travel this Thanksgiving than last year. The Automobile Club of Southern California expects 2.19 million people to travel for Thanksgiving — up 8 percent from last year but 32 percent fewer than the number of Thanksgiving travelers in 2007. The Auto Club said 85 percent of Southern California travelers would take Thanksgiving trips by car. While more people are expected on the roads this Thanksgiving than last year, the number of air travelers is expected to be slightly less than last year's figure. "There's a huge shift away from flying — a 60 percent drop from two years ago. That's big," Auto Club spokeswoman Marie Montgomery said. "Lots of people, either because of economic circumstances or they decide that the flights are too expensive, they're not going by air." Inland Empire gas prices are about 30 percent higher than this time last year.
