IT'S "DÉJÀ VU ALL OVER AGAIN" AT Z107.7!
In what could be a scene out of "Groundhog Day," Morongo Basin residents may think they have stepped into the Wayback Machine when they turn on their radios Monday Morning, November 5.
Radio personality Pat Michaels will be back in the air-chair, co-hosting the Z107.7 Morning Show with Gary Daigneault after a five year hiatus to Arizona. Les Taylor, who retired with honors in 2001 and agreed to come back "for 90 days," will be climbing back into his well-deserved rocking chair. Taylor and Daigneault were the original hosts of the Morning show when Z107.7 signed on to the air in July of 1989. Prior to that, they worked at the then-KDHI/KQYN radio stations in Twentynine Palms as a team since 1987. In February of 2001 Taylor retired, and Michaels, who had worked in various positions at Z107.7 since 1990, moved into the Morning show position. After a very successful six years with Z107.7, in 2007, Michaels followed his heart to the great State of Arizona where he became the Program Director and Morning Show host for KAFF Radio in Flagstaff. At that time Daigneault asked Taylor if he would fill in "for 90 days" until a replacement for Michaels could be found. After the 90 days was up Taylor was asked to stay on a "little longer." That was five years ago! With industry upheaval changing the radio market in Flagstaff, Michaels was offered a position in Palm Springs but his heart wanted to go home to the Morongo Basin and an agreement was reached for his return to Z107.7 where he still retains a significant fan base. "The Z107.7 Morning Show with Gary Daigneault and Pat Michaels, Part Deaux," starts the morning of November 5, 2012 with Michaels handling the control board and offering his unique down-home sense of humor and Daigneault handling the news and features. Z107.7 General Manager Cindy Daigneault is delighted with Michael's return saying, "We have always felt like one big family at Z107.7. Pat's return is just like one of the kids moving back home." She also expressed her appreciation for Les Taylor's dedication over the years, "I don't know what we would have done without Les, and we never imagined when we asked him to come out of retirement for a short time it would be for five years!"

QUESTIONS ARISE AS TWENTYNINE PALMS FIRE GOES TO COUNTY FIRE
Twentynine Palms Fire Department hand-over to San Bernardino County Fire will come with the same money woes the Department already faces. How will that affect coverage to home and business owners? Reporter Kristy Lockhart explains…
"This community is at risk. The transition of Fire protection was initiated in May when a proposed tax increase to fund the Department failed and the Department announced it was out of money. The last tax measure to fund fire operations was in 2005.The City of Twentynine Palms opted NOT to take over the Fire Department. "It appears they have other priorities." Fire Chief Jim Thompson says the County will inherit the money problems with the transfer, meaning they will be forced to make cuts in services and staff. With two stations, Twentynine Palms Fire Department averages seven calls a day. Chief Thompson says response time will increase if the county is forced to close one of the stations. A single engine company providing fire protection in this community is not enough." San Bernardino County Fire Officials will attend the City Council meeting on November 13 to address these concerns.

LANDERS MAN BURNS HIMSELF WHILE ON OXYGEN
A Landers man learned yesterday that it's not a good idea to use a lighter while on oxygen. Yucca Mesa firefighters were called to a home in the 2100 block of Bourbon Street about 6 p.m Tuesday, where they found a man, identified only—due to patient privacy laws—as being in his 80s, who had used a cigarette lighter while hooked up to an oxygen tank. The oxygen ignited, and the man received second-degree burns around his face and neck. He was transported to the Yucca Valley airport where a Mercy Air helicopter flew him to the burn unit at Arrowhead Medical Center.

YUCCA VALLEY TOWN COUNCIL MEETING ROUTINE LAST NIGHT
The Yucca Valley Town Council met in regular session, Managing Editor Tami Roleff says the meeting, including the usual cast of comment characters, was generally routine…
Last night's meeting of the Yucca Valley Town Council was just some routine housekeeping matters that merited no comments from the public or discussion by council members. In fact, the most excitement of the evening came during the public comments, when members of the audience stood up and gave their views, pro and con, about Measure U, the 1 percent sales and use tax measure on the ballot next week. After the Town Council adjourned, it reconvened as the Successor Agency to the Redevelopment Agency, which heard a report on the former RDA's housing funds. The state is requiring that all funds from former RDAs that aren't obligated toward bonds and repayments be turned over to the appropriate taxing agencies. A review by certified public accountants determined that the $1.6 million held by the Successor Agency are bond proceeds and enforceable obligations, leaving $0 to be remitted to the taxing entities.

MORONGO BASIN TRANSIT AUTHORITY GIVE GRANTS, GETS REPORTS LAST WEEK
The Morongo Basin Transit Authority, the MBTA, board doled out Transportation Assistance grants to a slew of Basin non-profits and received a presentation on the agency's ridership and finances from staff at its meeting last week. The Transportation Assistance Grant (TAG) program is funded by a procurement services program administered by MBTA. This year, the MBTA board made awards totaling $40,000 providing financial support to Reach Out Morongo Basin, The Department of Aging and Adult Services trip reimbursement program, Copper Mountain College Foundation, Morongo Basin Coalition for Adult Literacy and Morongo Basin Haven. The agency set a new record for ridership. The MBTA has experienced steady growth over the last decade from 133,000 passengers in 2000 to just over 387,000 this year. General Manager Joe Meer presented a wrap up of 2012's finances stating that the agency closed out the fiscal year with a surplus of $269,645. In other news, the MBTA recently took delivery of three new 37-passenger Eldorado XHF buses. The buses are the largest ever purchased by MBTA, and all are powered by clean Compressed Natural Gas engines. Meer said the additional seating capacity on these vehicles is sorely needed on the highway routes where these buses will be deployed.

TWENTYNINE PLAMS PLANNING COMMISSION CONTINUES TO SLOG THROUGH DEVELOPMENT CODES
In front of an audience consisting of zero citizens, and with one commissioner missing with an excused absence, the remaining four members of the Twentynine Palms Planning Commission continued their dutiful march through the City's Development Code, with reporter Dan Stork observing…
The Planning Commission began its eighth study session on the revision of the Development Code with a consideration of the reformatted land use tables. Here are some selected issues:
- Should a hookah lounge be included in the same category as a cigar lounge or smoke shop? (Consensus: Ask staff to develop this idea more fully.)
- Should an auto rental agency be limited to how long it can store a vehicle outside? (Consensus: No)
- Should auto parts stores and minor repair facilities be allowed in Neighborhood Commercial zones. (Consensus: Yes)
Then the Commission moved on to rules for Open Space Residential zones – of which the City currently has none. The members removed all sorts of commercial uses from this hypothetical zone, considering them to be incompatible with the notion of "open space." The Commission could not come to a consensus on how obligated a property owner in such a zone should be for street improvements, if at all. After a break, the Commission moved on to the nitty-gritty of standards for residential single dwelling zones.
