HALLOWEEN BRINGS HAZARDS TO YOUR PETS TOO
Candy, noise, costumes, and scary people—all elements of Halloween fun. But they don't add up to fun for pets. Reporter Dan Stork advises: Leave the tricks and treats for humans…
Many Halloween traditions pose distinct hazards for pets. Let's start with candy. Chocolate can be toxic to dogs and cats, particularly dark and baking chocolates. The sugar substitute xylitol, which is used in many "sugar-free" candies and most commonly in chewing gum, is known to cause toxic reactions in dogs. Even non-toxic items, like candy corn or pumpkin, can cause stomach upset for pets that nibble on them. The continual ringing of doorbells, accompanied by shouting little strangers, can be stressful to animals. Unless your dogs and cats are extremely well-socialized, it may be wise to keep them in a back room during trick-or-treating hours. Also, the frequent opening of doors can provide opportunities for a pet to slip out and get lost. As a precaution, get your pets ID'd, with microchip or collar tags. Muffie or Snowball may look really cute in a costume, but he or she may find it constricting and annoying to the point of anxiety. Some animal experts suggest that if you're still intent in dressing up a pet, take the time to do it ahead of Halloween, so that an animal can get used to it. Also, avoid costume elements that can be chewed on, or which are constricting or chafing. Finally, there may be some really creepy people out there, not just those who are pretending to be so -- animals who are out on their own can be targets of sadists, and this hazard isn't restricted to black cats. Be especially kind to your animals on Halloween.
