SCRAPPED MOTOR HOME BURNS TO THE GROUND IN SUNFAIR
A Joshua Tree man who tried to cut up a motor home for scrap metal ended up burning it to the ground yesterday afternoon. According to Fire Captain Steve Lasiter, a man in the 64200 block of Sun Mesa in the Sunfair area east of Joshua Tree was cutting a 1970s-era motor home into pieces for the scrap metal. However, Lasiter said, the man didn't remove all the flammable liquids from the motor home prior to cutting it up, and the liquids caught on fire. Lasiter added the winds were pretty strong and the fire just took off. The man tried to put out the fire himself, but he didn't have a fire extinguisher or hose. He eventually called the fire department about 2:40 Monday afternoon. Lasiter said the motor home was totally consumed by the blaze when firefighters arrived. The motor home was in the middle of the back yard and didn't threaten any structures. It took fire crews about 30 to 40 minutes to put out the fire and there were no injuries.

CIGARETTE BLAMED FOR FIRE IN TWENTYNINE PALMS
A burning cigarette is blamed for a fire in Twentynine Palms Friday. According to Engineer Jeff Rarey, firefighters were called to a fire just after 9 a.m. in a multi-family residence in the 6500 block of Desert Queen Avenue. A cigarette that was left too close to a bed is blamed for starting the fire, which was contained to the bedroom. Smoke from the fire activated the home's sprinkler system, which kept the fire from spreading. Arriving firefighters put out the fire in about 5 minutes. Rarey said damage to the home, which used to be the Cactus Manor Retirement Home, has more water damage than fire damage.
