SHERIFF'S EXPLORER RIDE-ALONG PROGRAM REINSTATED
After a hiatus of ride-a-longs called after the arrest of two deputies for investigation of having sex with minors involved in the Sheriff's explorer program, the program is being reinstated. The Sheriff's Explorer Program is composed of fifteen units throughout the County. The Sheriff's Department said in late April, after the arrests involving two of the Explorer units, Sheriff Rod Hoops ordered a full review and reconstruction of the Explorer program and suspended the ride-along portion of the program. During the review process, Sheriff's Volunteer Forces Division personnel met with all 15 Explorer posts throughout the department, 216 Explorers, and their parents. The results showed a clear need for education about the program and a coordinator handbook was given to each deputy and supervisor assigned to the program. Volunteer Forces training is now mandatory for all Explorers, Parents and Coordinators. An Explorer manual, and activity log book were designed to track the interaction of each individual Explorer, and their time spent with the deputies. Each Explorer is responsible for an activity log book and each activity or assignment must be approved by a parent, coordinator and Watch Commander. Additionally, each Explorer must maintain a 'C' average.
