LA DWP SAYS GREEN PATH MAY BE DEAD OR POSTPONED
The controversial Green Path North power line project, which proposes to run high tension lines thorough local pristine desert lands, may be dead or postponed. This Morning’s LA Times quotes DWP General Manager David Nahai as saying "We've heard the concerns of the community and so we're seriously contemplating taking that off the table." The proposed transmission line, which is about to undergo federal and state environmental review, is designed to bring electricity generated by solar, geothermal, wind and nuclear power to Los Angeles from California deserts and Arizona. At the very least, the city may shelve the agency's most controversial proposed route for the power corridor, which would cut through Big Morongo Wildlife Preserve, Pioneertown, and Pipes Canyon Wilderness Preserve before connecting with existing power lines in Hesperia.

GOVERNOR IN TWENTYNINE PALMS FRIDAY TO SIGN VIETNAM VETERANS DAY BILL
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will be coming to the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base Friday, to sign legislation, AB 717 which will now recognize Vietnam Veteran's Day as March 30th within the State of California. State Assemblyman Paul Cook told Z107-7 news the signing ceremony will take pace aboard the Combat Center on the General's lawn at 10:30am. All veterans and their families are invited and encouraged to attend the 30-minute ceremony. |
Anyone planning on attending should plan on arriving aboard the base no later than 9:30am. Veterans may obtain a pass for admittance onto the base from local veterans’ organizations, or they may contact Assemblyman Cook’s field Representative, Dawn Rowe, at 619-405-4767. Recognition by California is expected to add momentum to campaigns nationwide to salute Vietnam veterans. "It's not about the war," said Assemblyman Cook of Yucca Valley, a retired Marine Colonel who authored the bill. "It's about the individuals who fought the war and paid the price." Schools and state offices would not close on the special day of remembrance, but teachers would be encouraged to conduct "suitable commemorative exercises." The American public was deeply split over the Vietnam War, in which 58,000 U.S. troops died and more than 300,000 were wounded.

KIDS PLAYING WITH MATCHES SPARK FLAMINGO HEIGHTS FIRE
Kids playing with matches sparked a house fire in Flamingo Heights, leaving two adults and their two children without a place to live. Officials said Fire crews responded to a blaze in the 1400 block of Wamego Trail near Tanager road around 8:30 Friday night. Fire Chief Kat Opplinger said the fire started in a small laundry room type shed and spread to house in rear of a 4 home complex. Due to the large amount of items in the house it took Firefighters 30 to 40 minutes to completely douse the fire, yet were able to keep the flames away from the other buildings. Opplinger said the laundry room, house and its continence were a total loss, but could not set a dollar amount. No injuries were reported.

Mouths are sealed on the status of a lawsuit against WalMart and the Town of Yucca Valley, concerning the validity of the Environmental Impact Report or EIR, approved by the Yucca Valley Town Council last year. Several calls on the statues of the lawsuit to WalMart officials and attorneys have not been returned; e-mails ignored. Inside the Yucca Valley WalMart, under renovation over the past few weeks, employees are telling customers the work is being done since the Super Center won’t be built until 2013. Sources close to the opposition told Z107.7, the case is in a settlement phase, hence the tight lips of those involved.
