GRANDPARENTS ARRESTED AFTER THEY CHAINED THEIR CHILD TO A CHAIR
Two Twentynine Palms grandparents were arrested after police found evidence that they had shackled their 17-year-old grandson to a chair inside their home. According to Sheriff's Sergeant Jason Radeleff, the boy told another family member last Thursday that he was being handcuffed and chained with a padlock to a chair in his grandparent's living room for about the last six months. His grandparents then released him in the morning, he said. His grandmother, 63-year-old Virginia Smith, was arrested Thursday at her home in the 1600 block of Sunrise on suspicion of child cruelty. His grandfather, Douglas Smith, turned himself in at the Sheriff's station about 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon and was also arrested on suspicion of child cruelty. Their grandson, who is said to be in good health, was turned over to another family member. Virginia Smith was booked at the West Valley Detention Center and is scheduled to be arraigned today; Douglas Smith was booked at the jail with his arraignment set for Tuesday. Their bail is set at $100,000 each.

JURY SELECTION STARTS FOR MARINE CHARGED IN BABY'S DEATH
Lawyers announced Friday that they are ready to start jury selection in the case of a U.S. Marine accused of killing an 18-month-old baby in November 2010 in Twentynine Palms. Pre-trial motions for the case are expected to be heard today, and a jury panel was scheduled to report to the Joshua Tree Courthouse Tuesday. Joshua Kruzik, 23, is charged with murder and willful injury to a child causing death. Kruzik has been discharged from Marine duty and transferred to a civilian jail to face charges. Kruzik was staying with the baby's parents, Timothy and Melissa Allen, who were both Marines stationed in Twentynine Palms. Kruzik was in Twentynine Palms for training. On November 20, 2010, sheriff's deputies responded to the 6200 block of Daisy Avenue in Twentynine Palms after Timothy Allen came home and found his baby in her crib not breathing, authorities said. The County sheriff-coroner later determined the baby died because of blunt force trauma.

STAYING SAFE DURING AN EARTHQUAKE
September is Earthquake Safety Month and we live in earthquake territory. Reporter Dan Stork has these important reminders...
Part of earthquake preparedness is securing objects and stocking up supplies. Another part is knowing what to do when the shaker happens. If you're indoors, get under a sturdy table or desk. Outside, get into an open area away from buildings, trees, and power lines; in a business building, don't use the elevator. Stay away from windows, and from things can break and fall. In a public place, don't rush to the doors. If you're driving, pull over and stay inside. Try to avoid power lines and overpasses. For more information, visit www.ready.gov. Do it during September, which is National Preparedness Month.

ONE ARREST AFTER A HIGH SPEED CHASE IN TWENTYNINE PALMS
A high-speed pursuit in Twentynine Palms early Sunday morning resulted in the arrest of the driver on charges of felony evasion. About 1:45 a.m., a Sheriff's deputy attempted to pull over a 1999 Toyota Camry, driven by Lawrence Landers, 32, near Adobe Road and South Slope Drive, for a possible DUI. Landers refused to stop and drove at speeds up to 70 miles per hour through residential streets, southbound on Ocotillo Avenue. At Gorgonio Drive, Ocotillo Avenue takes a little jog to the right, and Landers was unable to negotiate the turn because of his speed. He lost control of his car, which crashed into a Ford LTD that was parked in an overflow parking lot for the Bowladium. Landers then fled on foot and was captured a short distance away by the pursuing deputy. Meanwhile, Landers' car continued rolling and struck another parked car. Lawrence Landers was arrested on suspicion of felony evasion, with a report to be forwarded to the District Attorney's office for a possible arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol. He was booked at the Morongo Basin Jail with his bail set at $100,000.
