SOBRIETY CHECKPOINT
The California Highway Patrol will conduct a sobriety checkpoint somewhere in the Morongo Basin tonight. The checkpoint will be held from 8 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday morning. Sobriety checkpoints are staffed by CHP Officers who are trained in the detection of alcohol and/or drug impaired drivers. CAR THEFT
A Yucca Valley man was arrested Thursday after he stole vehicles he had promised to repair. According to a Sheriff's report, about 6 months ago, Kevin Teague, 36, was looking for work. A Landers man offered Teague work, along with a 1996 Toyota pick-up truck to repair. Teague drove the truck to his apartment in the 6900 block of Mohawk Trail to work on it while he did other work for the owner. Then the truck's owner lent a Toyota 4-Runner to Teague for a few days, but Teague failed to return it. The owner went to Teague's home, and Teague agreed to drive it back to the owner's residence. But on the way to the owner's house, Teague took off in the vehicle. The Toyota truck was later found stripped on August 28. Kevin Teague was arrested Thursday for investigation of vehicle theft, vandalism of more than $400, and violation of his felony probation. He was booked into the Morongo Basin Jail and is being held without bail.

RECREATIONAL SHOOTING AND HUNTING
Dove hunting season opened this past Thursday. Managing Editor Tami Roleff gives hunters the legal and safety guidelines...
With the opening of dove hunting season, many people have questions about where they can legally hunt and target shoot. According to Sheriff's Sergeant Rick Collins, it is the responsibility of the hunters and shooters to know the laws for the area where they are shooting. Hunters and shooters are urged to find a safe backdrop. Shots fired across open desert can travel more than a mile. When target shooting, shoot only retrievable, freestanding targets. It is illegal to shoot at trees, bottles, or other objects. Take all used targets with you. Do not shoot within 150 yards of any man-made object, camp, domestic livestock, or occupied dwelling. Check with local sheriff or land management agencies before using an area for shooting. Do not shoot on Private Land without the owner's permission. All hunting in the desert is regulated by the California Department of Fish and Game. You must have a valid hunting license. It is your responsibility to know all laws and regulations related to the use of firearms in California. Hunting maps are available from the California Department of Fish and Game and from sporting goods stores and gun shops.
