PARENTS UPSET WITH NEW SCHOOL BUS ROUTES AND SCHEDULES
Many parents are up in arms about changes the Morongo Unified School District has made to the bus routes this year. Both the school district and Z107.7 have received numerous calls from irate parents who are upset that bus stops have been placed along busy roads and highways, including near a place on Indian Trail in Twentynine Palms where a student was killed two years ago. Other parents have complained that a bus stop for Onaga Elementary has been moved in front of a registered sex offender's home, while others are unhappy that their children have to walk a mile just to get to the bus stop, and others complained about waiting in the hot sun after school is over to catch a bus ride home. Assistant Superintendent Dave Price told Z107.7 News the school district has already changed many of the bus stops this week due to parental concerns, but noted that very few roads in the district have speed limits under 40 miles per hour. He added the District is struggling with cuts to its transportation budget due to the state's financial crisis. Only $2.1 million of its $4 million transportation budget comes from the state, which means the shortfall has to be made up with money from the general fund, which would otherwise be used to put more teachers in the classrooms to reduce class sizes. Price told Z107.7 if the District hadn't made the bus routes changes, its budget would be closer to $5 million, meaning more money out of the District's general fund. Price said neither the Board nor the School District staff like the changes that have been forced on the district and the students due to budget cuts. He stressed that the beginning of the new school year is difficult, and there are always going to be factors that need to be changed, and thanked parents for their patience.

FIRE SAFETY TIPS FOR THE LABOR DAY WEEKEND
This weekend is the three-day Labor Day weekend, and many people will enjoy the long weekend by camping or barbecuing. Managing editor Tami Roleff offers the following tips from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection on fire safety...
As people head out for the last three-day weekend of the summer, the thoughts of rest, relaxation, and fun also need to include thoughts of fire safety. As we've witnessed recently, California is dry and more than ready to burn. CalFire has some tips on how to be fire safe. In RVs, use only electric or battery-operated lights. When using gas appliances, light the match before turning on the gas. Keep a fire extinguisher by the door. When tent camping, use flame-resistant tents. Keep lanterns and open flames outside tents. For campfires, make sure fires are a safe distance from tents, trees, vehicles, and buildings. Make sure the fire is out before leaving the campsite. If you're barbecuing, grills must only be used outdoors. position the grill well away from siding, deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. CalFire reminds residents that people who start a fire through negligence can be held liable for the cost of putting out the fire.

Jerry Brown's desk. Under AB 1806, any U.S. military veteran or that veteran's immediate dependent whose remains are not claimed but are identified will be turned over to organizations that provide internment services for veterans. The California Department of Veterans Affairs will maintain a statewide database of veterans and veterans' dependents' unclaimed remains, under the bill.
