BURNT BODY FOUND IN JOSHUA TREE THIS MORNING
A burnt body was found this morning in Joshua Tree. Sheriff’s Sergeant Rick Collins said around 5:45 this morning, fire crews from Joshua Tree responded to a call that there of a fire burning on Hollinger Road just south of the State Route 62. When fire crews arrived, they found a body lying in the open desert, having been burned. Collins said Sheriff’s homicide detectives and the coroner will be taking over the investigation. Well will have more details when they become available.

3 ARRESTS DURING TWENTYNINE PALMS DUI CHECKPOINT
A Friday night DUI checkpoint at Adobe and Amboy Roads in Twentynine Palms netted 3 for driving under the influence. Sheriffs’ Corporal Rick Millard said 841 vehicles were passed through during the 8-hour operation. Of those, 43 were stopped and screened, and 7 field sobriety tests were given resulting in 3 arrests for DUI. Two others were cited for driving with a suspected license or not having a license, and ten tickets were given out for various equipment violations. Also in the mix, one arrest for carrying a switchblade knife and a minor was cited for being in possession of tobacco. A total of 3 vehicles were impounded during the enforcement action.

WATER IN NATURAL GAS LINES AFFECTS 130 IN JOSHUA TREE
Water in natural gas lines has led to a gas outage in Joshua Tree. The outage affected 130 customers. Reports started coming in on Saturday and the service interruption started Sunday. The source of water in the lines is not known, but Gas Company Public Affairs Manager Deborah McGarrey told Z107.7 that they have some good leads. It is not known when the problem will be corrected, but McGarrey said the situation poses no danger to the community. Most of the affected customers are residential, with the exception of the Methodist Church on Park Boulevard and Joshua Tree Elementary School. Since the School uses gas only for heat, and is otherwise all-electric, school operations at are not affected. Gas company officials said if natural gas customers see water coming out of gas appliances call 1-800-427-2200 immediately.

YUCCA VALLEY PLANNING COMMISSION MEETS TONIGHT
The Yucca Valley Planning Commission meets in regular session tonight. A public hearing on the proposed Brehm Youth Sports Park tops the list of issues. Reporter Tami Roleff takes a closer look...
The Yucca Valley Planning Commission will meet at 7:00 tonight in the Yucca Room of the Community Center. On the agenda, the Commission will hold a public hearing on the Brehm Youth Sport Park. The Commission will be asked to approve a conditional use permit, an environmental assessment, and a request to vacate, or abandon, Little League Drive, and exempt the park from undergrounding its utilities. Next up, the Commission will be asked to approve a tentative tract map to subdivide 86.79 acres into 60 residential lots. The project is located on the west side of Cholla Avenue north and south of Golden Bee Drive.

CHP OFFERS START SMART TEEN DRIVING COURSE
The California Highway Patrol is continuing the free Start Smart classes being held at the Morongo Basin CHP office. The next class will be held on Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 8:00. Teen drivers are found at fault in 66% of all fatal collisions, although they only represent 4% of the state’s licensed drivers. California has the second highest fatality rate involving drivers between the ages of 15 to 19. The California Highway Patrol designed the Start Smart class to address traffic safety issues that directly affect new drivers in a way no other program does. This program provides classroom instruction on collision avoidance techniques, collision causing elements, and driver responsibilities. Parents and newly licensed or soon to be drivers interested in taking the class need to pre-register by calling Morongo Basin California Highway Patrol Area office at 760-366-3707.

BIGHORN DESERT VIEW WATER AGENCY MEET TONIGHT
The Bighorn Desert View Water Agency Board of Directors meet in regular session this evening. Reporter Mike Lipsitz joins us with a look at their agenda...
The Bighorn-Desert View Water Agency Board of Directors holds its regular meeting at 6 o’clock tonight at the Agency offices located under the big water tower on Cherokee Trail in Landers. On tonight’s agenda, directors are expected to review the final draft of an agreement between the agency and its partners in the management of the Reche Groundwater Sub-basin. Also, the board is expected to approve a change order to the water infrastructure restoration program for the amount of $8,260. Directors will also review the proposed letter to LAFCO pertaining to the exclusion of Gubler’s Orchids from the service review and sphere of influence update. Those actions are in addition to a review of July disbursements. Then, following approval of routine items on the consent agenda, the board will hear reports from the President, General Manager, and directors.

TEEN TENNIS RAPS UP ITS SUMMER SEASON
Friday Night Teen Tennis ended its 2010 summer session, Friday at Jacobs Park. Two singles tournaments were run with the highlight of the evening being a fast serve contest using a sports radar. Advanced tournament winners are, Jasmine Smith, gold; Zane Gray, silver; and Whitney Rodriguez, taking the bronze. Intermediate tournament winners are, Kalie Hendry, gold; Kayle Gonzales, silver; and Sara Heinemann, bronze. Fast Serve Aces are, Whitney Rodriguez, at 76 mph and Jordan Williamson, at 79 mph. Tournament Director Cindy Rodriguez and Coach Larry Battle were lauded for their program service. Friday Night Teen Tennis returns summer of 2011, from July through August. TWENTYNINE PALMS CITY COUNCIL CANCELS, RESCHEDULE SPECIAL MEETING
The Twentynine Palms City Council has canceled its regular meeting for this evening. Reporter Dan Stork tells us when it will be re-scheduled...
The regular meeting of the Twentynine Palms City Council scheduled for August 24 has been canceled. However, there will be a special meeting of the Council on the following Tuesday, August 31. One topic that will be taken up at the special meeting are a Temporary Use Permit for Chalkfest 29, a street art fair that Action Council 29 would like to stage on a portion of Adobe Road the first weekend in November. The second expected topic is land use moratoria, which is related to the issue of over-concentration of certain types of business, which has been a concern of some citizens and officials.

JOSHUA TREE CLEAN TEAM IN ACTION WEDNESDAY MORNING
The Joshua Tree Clean Team will be out helping keep our desert landscape pristine and healthy. Clean Team members will meet at the corner of State Route 62 and Sunny Vista Road on the south side of the highway, Wednesday morning starting at 7. Make sure you bring your gloves, sturdy footwear and plenty of water. Grabbers and bags will be provided. Drop on by and help the Clean Team keep our desert litter free.

So a bunch of grown ups from the County and Joshua Tree Rec and Park District are now accepting registrations for a Preschool program. Quit sucking that thumb, pull your socks up and get Mom or Dad to take you to the open house, held at 6617 Easterly Drive Community Park behind the Fire Station in Joshua Tree, on Wednesday August 25th and 26th, from 9 in the morning until noon. LONGTIME JOSHUA TREE BUSINESSMAN, ROBERT LUNDQUIST, DIED AT 93
Robert Lundquist long-time resident of Joshua Tree and passed away in Santa Barbara on Friday, he was 93. He was born January 3, 1917 in Hopkins, Minnesota. He moved to California in 1951 and started coming to the Morongo Basin as a weekender in 1952 and moved to Joshua Tree in 1981. He retired as an engineer-businessman after 29 years of employment. Robert was involved with the Morongo Basin Alzheimer’s Support Group, served on the Board of Morongo Basin Mental Health, Inland Counties Resources Center, Hospice, and spent 12 years as a director on the Hi-Desert Medical Center Board of Directors. He is survived by his daughter, Susan LaRoque of Big Fork, Montana, son Mark of Joshua Tree, daughter Liz of Santa Barbara, brother Jim of Shady Oak, Minnesota, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Robert Lundquist was preceded in death by his wife, Jane.
