ONE DEAD, A SECOND WOUNDED IN JOSHUA TREE SHOOTING
One person is dead, another seriously wounded in a double shooting in North Joshua Tree Friday. Sheriff’s Lieutenant Dale Mondary said deputies were called out on a dispute call in the 4700 block of Avenida La Flora Deserita about 11 a.m. While in route, a woman at the home identified as 60 year old Linda Neal called saying she had just been shot in the stomach. Arriving deputies found Neal, a caretaker, sitting in the living room with a wound to her stomach; an unidentified man dead on the floor with a gun shot wound to the head. Mondary said it appeared that Neal had been shot by the man, who then turned the gun on himself. Neal was taken by ambulance to Joshua Tree Elementary School and then flow out to a hospital for treatment. The man’s name has not been released pending notification of next of kin. The sheriff’s department continues to investigate.

BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, PAUL COOK BLAST STATE LAWMAKERS OVER PRISONER RELEASE
The County Board of Supervisors harshly criticized the state Senate for approving a plan to release 27,000 inmates from state prisons onto the streets of California and weaken sentencing laws. Board Chairman Gary C. Ovitt said "The primary responsibility of a public official is to protect citizens and I am outraged by the state Senate’s action to clearly violate that trust." The Senate voted 21-19 to approve a plan to reduce the prison population by 27,000 inmates and form a commission that could change sentencing laws in the future. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has said he supports the plan. First District Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt condemned the action as potentially dangerous. Also responding to the vote, 65th Assemblymen Paul Cool had some sharp comments on prison release plan. Cook said "In the next weeks when we’re back in session, going to have some real hot issues that are going to be taken up, and the fist one is how it’s going to shave 1.2 billion dollars from the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation budget. It’s probably going to be a majority vote prison package that will reduce the state’s inmate population by 27,000. I’m very, very concerned about flooding our neighborhoods with convicted felons. This is a very, very dangerous situation. Don’t forget, we have a recidivism rate of almost 70 percent."
