JOSHUA TREES AND DESERT LIFE CYCLES
The singular plant that gives its name to the magnificent National Park next door to us in the Morongo Basin, plays a singular role in the life cycles of the desert. Ranger Pam Tripp gives us some insights...
The Mojave Desert is a harsh landscape with Joshua Trees standing as sentinels of survival. When driving through Joshua Tree National Park , you may notice many of these trees look dead. Drought related stress causes some mortality but due to last years’ scanty rains, there is an additional factor: thirsty animals. Critters such as the antelope ground squirrel, pocket gopher and jackrabbit are desperately seeking moisture by chewing the fibrous wood inside and out on the Joshua Trees. Grasses and other tender plants are their preferred diet and where sporadic rains have fallen, healthy Joshua Trees are still thriving. One hidden benefit for the trees is seed dispersal. The antelope ground squirrel collects & buries the tiny black seeds, eating some and leaving others to sprout and grow more trees. Supplying food and shelter to desert animals, Joshua Trees remind us of the delicate cycles in nature- both in life and death.
