Super Walmart eyeing Desert Hot Springs
Yucca Valley is not alone among nearby communities facing the promise or the specter (depending how you view it) of a Super Walmart. Desert Hot Springs is also in that select company. According to local media reports, more than 60 residents gathered recently for a scoping meeting, the public unveiling of the retail giant’s proposal and a precursor to drafting the environmental impact report. Many residents have enthusiastically supported the Arkansas-based corporation, which has set its sight on a city with few major retailers other than Kmart. It wants to build a 120,476-square-foot store built southwest of Palm Drive and Camino Aventura, about three miles north of Interstate 10. The plans include a garden center and grocery store. Much of the meeting was focused on soliciting residents’ concerns that must be addressed in the environmental impact report. Concerns that were voiced included worries that a Walmart would drive local businesses away, increase traffic dramatically or use too much water. A draft of an environmental impact report will be open for public review in spring 2012. City action on the project, including public hearings, is slated to follow in September 2012. The city expects the store could break ground as early as fall 2012. Residents would set foot in the retailer about one year later

Perseids Meteor Shower
It’s not too late to catch part of that annual celestial spectacle, the Perseid meteor showers. Managing Editor Tami Roleff points us in the right direction.
The Perseid meteor showers are the best and most prolific of the meteor showers. While Friday night/Saturday morning was the peak viewing time for the meteors, they can still be seen, with the best viewing time between midnight and dawn. Due to the full moon, though, only the brightest meteors will be able to be seen. But, if you want to try to watch the meteors, drive toward the northeast, away from the glow of city lights. Driving south may lead you to darker skies, but the glow in the north will dominate the northeastern horizon. Perseid meteors will appear to "rain" into the atmosphere from the constellation Perseus, which rises in the northeast around 11 p.m. in mid-August. Once you have settled in at your observing spot, lie back or position yourself so the horizon appears at the edge of your peripheral vision, with the stars and sky filling your field of view. Meteors will instantly grab your attention as they streak by. Remember, even if you don’t see any shooting stars, you’ll still have been out and enjoying our beautiful night skies. Reporting for Z107.7, this is managing editor Tami Roleff.
