COPPER MOUNTAIN COLLEGE GOES GREEN
Helping to improve the environment, Copper Mountain College turned on the switch and started producing its own power. Reporter Tami Roleff says the campus is going green...
Copper Mountain College has begun producing a significant amount of its own electricity. On Tuesday, June 29, a switch was flipped allowing the nearly 1,100 solar panels that cover the college’s parking area to begin producing energy for the college. The 250 kilowatt covered parking area is designed to provide nearly 30 percent of the college’s electricity. The original solar field design was scrapped in 2008 in favor of the solar covered parking area to preserve the desert landscape and provide shaded parking for students and employees. The solar project was paid for with funds from the Measure C bond approved by Morongo Basin voters. The solar energy panels will also be part of a new curriculum in solar energy at the college. In addition, a small wind turbine is planned that will also provide energy for the college and serve as a learning lab for students.
