CALIFORNIA STOLEN VALOR ACT REMAINS UNTOUCHED
The California Stolen Valor Act will remain in effect even after the United States Supreme Court found the Federal Stolen Valor Act unconstitutional in a 6-3 decision yesterday. This act states that it is illegal for a person to make a false claim of a military decoration. The Supreme Court overturned the federal law because there was no direct link between the false claim and any actual damages. Assemblyman Paul Cook authored California's version of the Stolen Valor Act. It will not be affected by this decision because, unlike the federal law, Cook's Stolen Valor Act required that there be an "intent to defraud" when lying about military service. Cook responded to the ruling saying, "The Stolen Valor Act is an important law punishing those who defraud the public by making false claim of military service and decorations. While I'm disappointed that the Supreme Court ruled against the federal Stolen Valor Act, I'm not surprised. That's why I made sure California's Stolen Valor Act addressed the major weakness of the federal act."

TWENTYNINE PALMS CEMETERY DISTRICT PUTTING ITS HOUSE IN ORDER
The Twentynine Palms Cemetery Board met this week. Reporter Dan Stork says the board is going about the business of putting their house in order in lieu of scrutiny by county regulators...
In its first regular meeting since receiving a reprieve from the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO), the Board of Trustees of the Twentynine Palms Public Cemetery District went about the business of getting its house in order. LAFCO had continued its review of the District's finances and record-keeping until August, after uncovering discrepancies and questionable practices in the way the District kept track of its affairs. District Administrator Cassandra Dobler reported that the audit for the current year fiscal year is expected to be completed by July 20. The Board tabled a detailed discussion of the budget, after Trustee Sandra Gray noted that in its present form, it does not match the format expected by the county. Gray also said that she is continuing to review and collect the scattered procedures of the District into a single notebook. A committee to compose a 5-year plan will be created. In other business, it was reported that a water well that was drilled in the early 80s may be capable of meeting most of the District's water needs, but will need some repair and rehabilitation. The Board will hold a special meeting on July 19.

THINK BEFORE YOU TOSS TRASH OUT OF YOUR CAR
Our Morongo Basin roads are showing more and more roadside trash. Managing editor Tami Roleff says think before you toss...
Here's one for you. Did you ever wonder exactly what kind of "footprint" you're leaving on the planet? Well if you throw your "footprint-making" leather shoes out of the car window, they would take between 25 and 40 years to disappear (unless someone picked them up, of course). What about that cigarette butt? Ten to 12 years. Plastic bags, 10 to 20 years. Plastic containers, 50 to 80 years. Aluminum cans, 80 to 100 years. Styrofoam? Never. Nobody wants to stumble across your litter for decades to come, especially in our windy desert, so think beyond yourself and make a difference, by not trashing our home.
