IS WORKING WHILE SICK WRONG?
More than half of employees without paid sick days say they’ve gone to work even when they’ve known they were contagious, said a new survey on paid sick leave sponsored by the Public Welfare Foundation. The same survey shows 75 percent think that’s wrong and support paid sick days a basic worker’s right. It’s estimated 40 percent of California’s do not receive paid sick days. Deborah Ness with the National Partnership for Women and Families says there’s growing recognition that paid sick leave benefits employers as well as employees. "It reduces the spread of contagion, it improves productivity and employee loyalty and retention, and it reduces cost associated with hiring and training replacement workers." The national Federation of Independent Business doesn’t agree, and has lobbied against such policies proposed at the national, state and local levels, saying the requirement would lead to higher expenses for employers, and thus, layoffs. San Francisco passes a law requiring paid sick time not only for employees who are ill, also for those caring for a sick child or other relative. Predictions that the area would see massive layoffs as a result didn’t materialize. "And not only is it working, but employment there remains stronger than in neighboring counties that do not guarantee paid sick days… even through is recession." Another discovery in the poll – People without paid sick days were twice as likely to use ER’s because they weren’t able to take time off. Ness said paid sick days are relevant to successful to health care reform. "As we implement health care reform with all its focus on prevention, we should all remember that hard working people need time, without losing pay or their jobs, to recover from illness and get the health care they need.

SEAT BELT USE
If you’re one of the many that never use seat belts for what ever reason, Sheriff’s Service Specialist Anita Baker says it’s not a good idea...
To understand the value of seat belt use, it’s important to understand some of the dynamics of a crash. Every motor vehicle crash is actually comprised of three collisions. The first collision is known as the car’s collision, which causes the car to buckle and bend as it hits something and comes to an abrupt stop. This occurs in approximately one-tenth of a second. The second collision occurs as the car’s occupants hit some part of the vehicle. At the moment of impact, unbelted occupants are still traveling at the vehicles original speed. Just after the vehicle comes to a complete stop, these unbelted occupants will slam into the steering wheel, the windshield, some other part of the vehicle interior or another occupant. Even after the occupant’s body comes to a complete stop, the internal organs are still moving forward. This third collision is the internal collision and often causes serious or fatal injuries. During a crash, properly fastened safety belts distribute the forces of rapid deceleration over larger and stronger parts of the person’s body, such as the chest, hips and shoulders. The safety belt stretches slightly to slow your body down and to increase its stopping distance. The difference between the belted person’s stopping distance and the unbelted person’s stopping distance is significant. It’s often the difference between life and death.
