STOLEN SUV CATCHES ON FIRE IN LANDERS
There was a lot of action out in the Flamingo Heights area Thursday night. About 8:10, firefighters at the Yucca Mesa station received a call of a vehicle fire near the 300 block of North Delgada Avenue and Vans Ranch Road, in Landers. Neighbors driving by saw a Toyota Pathfinder being driven on the dirt road with smoke coming out. When the car caught on fire, the occupants fled, leaving the car burning. Yucca Mesa firefighters were not able to reach the car because the road was more like a wash than a road. They called for a 4-wheel-drive vehicle from Joshua Tree to assist. While waiting for the Joshua Tree fire truck to arrive, the Yucca Mesa fire fighters threw dirt on the SUV to try to put out the fire. Around the same time, several 911 calls were received from people saying they were in the area and injured. Sheriff and CHP helicopters were called out to search, but were unable to locate anyone. The Pathfinder was subsequently determined to have been stolen.
