TWENTYNINE PALMS MARINE KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN YESTERDAY
The Morongo Basin military and civilian communities mourn the death of a local Marine. The Department of Defense announced the death of a Twentynine Palms Marine who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. Corporal Taylor Baune, 21, of Andover, Minnesota, died yesterday while conducting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, Twentynine Palms.

TWO ARRESTED WITH STOLEN FENCING
Two people were arrested Tuesday afternoon after they were found with stolen fencing in their truck. According to a Sheriff's report, neighbors called about 1:15 to report that they could see a man and a woman loading metal fence posts and chain link fencing from her neighbor's home, in the 62300 block of Jericho Way in Joshua Tree, into a pick up truck. After an investigation, Richard Reum, 38, of Joshua Tree, and Sherry Steigler, 47, of Twentynine Palms were arrested on suspicion of grand theft. Richard Reum and Sherry Steighler were booked into the Morongo Basin Jail with their bail set at $50,000 each.

SCHOOL DISTRICT OFFERS SUMMER FEEDING PROGRAM
The Morongo Unified School District if offering a free summer feeding program based at area schools. Adults can eat too for a nominal fee. Reporter Dan Stork has details...
The importance of good nutrition for children doesn't end with the school year. To ensure the availability of good meals during the summer, the Morongo Unified School District is conducting a Summer Feeding Program, starting Monday June 18. Both breakfast and lunch will be provided for free for ages 0 to 18 during 15- or 20-minute windows on Mondays through Thursdays, so get there on time. Times and ending dates of the program vary by site. Yucca Mesa Elementary offers breakfast only, at 9:45 am, through July 19.
Twentynine Palms and Yucca Valley High Schools offer meals through July 26. Both start breakfast at 9:20 am. Twentynine Palms High School starts lunch at 12:30, while Yucca Valley High lunch begins at 12:10. Two other sites offer breakfast and lunch, through August 9. At the Twentynine Palms Youth Center, breakfast is distributed at 8:35, and lunch at 11:30. At the Yucca Valley Boys and Girls Club, the times are 8:30, and 11:40. 14-YEAR TWENTYNINE PALMS CITY CLERK RETIRING
The Twentynine Palms City Council will officially recognize former long-time employee Charlene "Char" Sherwood with a City plaque and resolution at its next regular meeting on Tuesday, June 26. The meeting will begin at a special time of 5 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall. The public is invited to attend and share their good wishes with Sherwood, recently retired from her position as City Clerk, Sherwood was a 17-year employee of the City of Twentynine Palms. VACANCIES ON TWENTYNINE PALMS CHAMBER BOARD
The Twentynine Palms Chamber of Commerce has vacancies on their Board of Directors. Eligible candidates must be a business member, representative of any business membership or associated member in good standing. Qualified applicants can stop by the Chamber to pick up an application. The Hi-Desert Medical Center's Home Health Services Alzheimer's Support Group will host a guest speaker from the Alzheimer's Association to present information on communicating with and understanding the challenging behaviors of the Alzheimer's patient. REPUBLICAN WOMEN MEET MONDAY
The public is invited to the Yucca Valley Republican Women Federated 50th Birthday party. The June 18 celebration will be held at Evangelical Free Church at 5:30 p.m. Town Manager Mark Nuami will update the club on Yucca Valley happenings and the 2012 scholarship recipient Elizabeth Fleck will read her essay. Everyone who attends is requested to bring a wrapped "white elephant" gift to exchange. The cost for the evening's festivities is $12. The City of Twentynine Palms Park and Recreation presents a movie premier of Kung Fu Panda 2 Thursday, June 14, at the racquetball court in Luckie Park. This animated film stars a panda named Po and his friends who fight to stop a peacock villain from conquering China with a deadly new weapon. The movie will begin at 8:30 p.m. and viewers are invited to bring a blanket, lawn chairs, family and friends to enjoy watching this movie in the summer evening at Luckie Park. PETS IN BLACK ARE BACK AT THE HUMANE SOCIETY SHELTER
In an effort to promote the adoption of the least adopted segment of a shelter population, the Morongo Baisn Humane Society's No-Kill shelter in Joshua Tree is lowering the adoption fees by half on all black or mostly black pets for the month of June. This means black dogs will be $50 and black cats $30. These fees include spay or neutering and all appropriate shots. Black animals are often overlooked by potential adopters, and the Morongo Basin Humane Society staff wants to give these deserving pets a chance at a forever home. TWENTYNINE PALMS RECREATION SEEKING SLOW-PITCH UMPIRES
The City of Twentynine Palms Park and Recreation Department is looking for slow pitch softball umpires for their coed and men's softball leagues. Leagues start in the middle of July.
