CHASE BANK IN YUCCA VALLEY ROBBED FRIDAY AFTERNOON
Police have a suspect in custody who they say robbed the Chase Bank in Yucca Valley early this afternoon. According to Lieutenant Rich Boswell, about 12:30, a white male, about 6 feet tall, wearing a black and white bandana, robbed the Chase bank at the corner of Highway 62 and Joshua Lane, escaping with an undisclosed amount of money. Bank employees closed down the bank before calling police at 12:34, who arrived at the scene seconds later. Tellers did not see the robber with a weapon, nor did they see if he left on foot or in a vehicle. A helicopter was called in to help in the search for the suspect. A deputy recognized the description of the suspected bank robber, and went to his residence in the 7000 block of Cibola where he was taken into custody. The suspect's identity has not yet been released to the media.

CANADIAN VISITOR FOUND DEAD IN JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK
The body of a missing park visitor was found by search-and-rescue personnel at Joshua Tree National Park Wednesday evening. A 41-year-old Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, man was found on a rock-strewn hillside six-tenths of a mile southeast of the Jumbo Rock Campground. The name of the victim is being withheld pending confirmation and notification of next of kin. According to a friend who reported the man missing, the camper arrived at Joshua Tree National Park Saturday and was to have returned to a friend's home on Tuesday. The camper was reported missing Wednesday morning. Initial reports indicated that the man was staying at Indian Cove Campground, but a search of the Indian Cove area by park rangers failed to locate either the missing person or his car. The search was broadened to include all park campgrounds, picnic areas, and trailheads and his car was eventually found at Jumbo Rocks Campground. A ground and air search eventually located the missing man about 9:30 p.m. in an area of granite cliffs and boulder formations.

8TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT NOW TOO CLOSE TO CALL
The race for the newly created 8th congressional district has tightened up and is now being called too close to call, the outcomes hinges on ballots left uncounted. Under the state's new "top two" primary system, only the first- and second-place finishers in the primary can advance to the fall election. The 13-candidate race in the District, which includes the Morongo Basin, now has four candidates bunched near the top: Republican Assemblyman Paul Cook of Yucca Valley, who was in first place; Lake Arrowhead home-builder and anti-illegal-immigration activist Gregg Imus, also a Republican; Barstow Democrat Jackie Conaway; and Phil Liberatore, a Republican tax consultant based in Whittier. Still to be counted are mailed ballots that arrived by Election Day but were too late to be included in the tallies posted after the polls closed that night and so-called provisional ballots, which require checking for voter eligibility or duplication. Election officials have less than a month to finish counting.

SETTLEMENT REACHED WITH COUNTY ON DESERT LANDS
After five years of negotiations, an agreement has been reached between San Bernardino County and three conservation groups over the use of sensitive desert lands in the Mojave Desert. The settlement between the County, National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management and the groups will protect species such as big horn sheep and fragile desert areas, according to the Center for Biological Diversity. The settlement recognizes some of the County's claims to roads but at the same time protects sensitive areas of the Mojave National Reserve from future claims. The three conservation groups involved in the suit, the National Parks Conservation Association, Center for Biological Diversity and Sierra Club, are parties to the settlement. The Mojave National Preserve covers 1.6 million acres of desert land east on Twentynine Palms and was established in 1994 with the passage of the California Desert Protection Act, which also established Joshua Tree National Park.
