EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNINGS, COOL CENTERS IN TWENTYNINE PALMS, LANDERS
The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning from tomorrow through Monday. The City of Twentynine Palms says the Senior Center 6539 Adobe Road will be open as a cooling center Monday through Friday from 9-5. Should the heat index reach 115 degrees, or other conditions necessitate, the Senior Center will be open additional hours as a designated and is equipped with a backup generator in case of power outages, residents can call the Senior Center at 760-367-5780. The Landers Association is opening Belfield Hal to anyone who wants to escape the heat Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Free games, movies and various card games are available to anyone wanting relief from the mid-day heat. Belfield Hall is 1 block east of the Landers Post Office. For information, call 760-364-2676. Joshua Tree will not open their cooling center until July 1st and no information was received from Yucca Valley. Here are a few simple steps to stay cool: -Turn on air conditioning, swamp coolers, portable or ceiling fans to help keep rooms cooler. Increase fluid intake, especially water, Avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages. If you or someone you know is feeling ill from the heat remove them from the heat immediately, offer water, seek medical help or call 911. Limit outdoor activity to morning and evening hours. If you work outside, be sure to begin drinking fluids well before your job begins and to keep drinking fluids. Arrange your work, if possible, in the cooler hours of the day. Seniors, infants, young children, and people with chronic health conditions should take extra precautions. Residents should check on their elderly family members, neighbors and friends to make sure they are safe and comfortable. Remember to drink plenty of fluids, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing, and pace yourself when outside.

SURVEY SHOWS WE NEED TO CONSERVE WATER
A new survey shows that we are indeed aware of the need to save water. Managing Editor Karl Gardner explains...
A recent survey shows a large majority of Californians believe that the state needs to conserve water, something Morongo Basin residents have known from decades. The survey was released Thursday by Save Our Water, California’s largest water conservation public education program. The Survey of 1200 California’s showed 94 percent believe that, even with the year’s wet weather, the state needs to save water. It also shows 86 percent are willing to make significant changes in their household activities to reduce their water use. The survey also found more than 80 see state’s current water shortage as a significant problem, including one quarter who labeled it as a "crisis."

SUSPECT IN YUCCA VALLEY STRONG ARMED ROBBERY CAUGHT
A Yucca Valley man sought in a strong-armed robbery in Yucca Valley has been caught. Good Police work by Sheriffs’ detectives lead to the arrest of Chance Lewis, 18. Sheriff’s officials said Wednesday evening around 6, two suspects, described as male juveniles, forcefully grabbed a woman’s purse as she was walking from her car to the Rite Aid store in Yucca Valley. The suspects then fled the scene. The victim’s purse was recovered minus her bank card and cell phone. Sheriffs’ officials said Lewis was identified through witnesses’ descriptions and using Yucca Valley High School Year Book photos. Lewis who was set to graduate from Yucca Valley High School next week, was located and booked into the Morongo Basin Jail for investigation of strong-armed robbery, and is being held on $100,000 bail. A second person thought to be a suspect was found not to have been involved.

ABANDONED TRUCK LEADS TO DUI ARREST
Investigating an abandon pick-up truck lead to the arrest of a man for DUI. Sheriffs’ spokeswoman Vera Martinez said just after midnight Thursday, Deputy Ryan Cook was checking an abandoned pick-up at the corner of State Route 247 and Buena Suerta Road in Yucca Valley. As Cook was investigating, the driver identified as Patrick Downs, 18, came back to the location. Downs told Cook that he was driving the pick-up and "zoned out" causing him to crash. Downs reported a neighbor saw the crash and gave him a rode home. Deputies conducted a field sobriety test suspecting Downs was under the influence of Marijuana and prescription drugs. Patrick Downs was booked into the Morongo Basin Jail for investigation DUI, and was released at 5:45 Thursday morning.

MAN HELD AFTER THROWING SHOPPING CARTS AROUND
A Yucca Valley man tossing shopping carts around at the Food-4-Less shopping center drew unwanted attention from the sheriffs’ department. Sheriffs’ officials said Wednesday evening about 10:40, deputies were called to La Casita Restaurant on reports an irate customer was out in the parking lot throwing shopping carts around. The caller told dispatchers the man was last seen running across the highway near the fire station, and was tying to fight with another man. Arriving Deputy Ryan Cook located Edward Aguilar, 21 in the middle of Joshua Lane. Cook said Aguilar could not speak in complete sentences. The Man Aguilar tried to fight did not want to press charges. Edward Aguilar was booked into the Morongo Basin Jail for investigation of disorderly conduct and being drunk in public, and released just after midnight Thursday.

The Town of Yucca Valley will host an end of the school year dance celebration for all school age children in grades K-6th, Saturday, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The cost is $3.00 per child. TWENTYNINE PALMS HIGH SCHOOL HONOR SOCIETY HOOKED ON BOOKS AT LIBRARY TOMORROW
Members of National Honor Society at Twentynine Palms High School have taken up the Hooked on Books program, to promote summer reading for young readers. These students will be reading stories at the Twentynine Palms Library tomorrow from 10 am until noon for kids ages 4 to 13. Every child who participates gets to choose a free book, from hundreds of titles, to take home and keep.

The Copper Mountain Mesa Community Association will be having it’s First Saturday Breakfast tomorrow at 65336 Winters Road in North Joshua Tree. The Yucca Valley pool will open for the summer beginning June 14. The first of four 2-week swim lesson sessions for children begins June 21. Priority registration for Yucca Valley residents begins June 5; non-residents may register starting June 12. The Yucca Valley pool is located at 7600 Sage Avenue in Yucca Valley.

ADULT SUMMER SOFTBALL LEAGUES STARTING IN YUCCA VALLEY
Enjoy the warm summer evenings playing slow-pitch softball at the Yucca Valley Community Center. The registration deadline for the Town of Yucca Valley’s Adult Summer Slow-Pitch Softball League is Wednesday, June 9th. Completed league registration form and fees are to be turned in by this date. League Fees are $400 per team with three league offerings for the summer season. Games will be played weekday evenings at the Community Center ball field with Ladies League on Monday, Traditional Coed League on Tuesday and Thursday; and Coed 7&3 (7 men, 3 women in the field) League on Wednesday. A Manager’s meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the Ocotillo Room of the Yucca Valley Community Center where team schedules and league details will be distributed.
