MARINE BASE SCRAPPERS RAM TRUCK, FLEE HELICOPTERS, 1 HELD
Yet another ‘scrapping’ episode aboard the sprawling Twentynine Palms Marine Base. Base officials said Sunday morning about 8:32 the Conservation Law Enforcement Officer for the Marine Base called range control to report a civilian vehicle in the Lavic Lake training area. Multiple units, including the special response team and a helicopter chased the vehicle through the training area. At one point a federal officer’s truck was rammed by the suspects' vehicle. The suspects’ drove over 2 miles in reverse until their vehicle became disabled and they fled on foot. At about 1:00 that afternoon the first suspect was apprehended by military law enforcement and turned over to the Sheriff’s Department. His name has not been released. Crews continued to search on the ground and from the air for the second suspect who'd reportedly been injured during the off road chase. Personnel stopped searching at dusk and left water in the area for the missing suspect. By noon on Monday range safety officials determined no one was in the training area and authorized training to resume. The halt in training and resources expended to search for the trespassers reach into the thousands of dollars.

YUCCA VALLEY TOWN COUNCIL PART 2: PROPERTY LIENS, TOWN COMMISSION APPOINTMENTS
Tuesday night’s Yucca Valley Town Council meeting saw a lot of talk about the town’s budget, or lack thereof. In a second part, reporter Tami Roleff covers other action taken Tuesday night...
Tuesday night’s meeting of the Yucca Valley Town Council wasn’t all about the Town’s budget deficit. In other business, the Town Council passed a resolution to place tax liens totaling $8,900 on five properties. The properties were declared a public nuisance, and when the owners did not clean up their property, the Town did.

Bills for the clean-up costs have not been paid; hence the tax lien. The properties are located at 58218 Desert Gold Drive, 57573 Sunnyslope Drive, 56644 Antelope Trail, 7605 Borrego Trail, and 2 vacant lots at Twentynine Palms Highway and Grand Avenue. Moving on, the Council named Gregory Graham to the Planning Commission, and Jeff Evans to the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Commission. It tabled an ordinance establishing erosion and sediment control regulations to a future meeting when Council Member Frank Luckino would be present to discuss the issue. And finally, it recognized Maureen Randall of the Community Services Department as Employee of the Year.

COUNTY TO LOSE 85 POSITIONS FROM DA AND PUBLIC DEFENDER
The San Bernardino County District Attorney's and Public Defender's offices are preparing to eliminate about 85 positions as the county tries to reduce its $89.4 million budget gap. The Board of Supervisors is expected to receive the proposed 2010-2011 budget today. Almost all of the 85 filled positions in the District Attorney's and Public Defender's offices are being eliminated because the state has cut funding to various programs, including the District Attorney's gang injunction unit, cold case unit and identity theft unit. The county's ongoing negotiations with its labor unions will be the big deciding factor in how the budget plays out. If the unions agree to forgo pay raises, further layoffs could be averted. If they don't, up to 410 additional positions, including sheriff's deputies could be eliminated, said a county spokesman. The District Attorney's Office expects to lose about 30 positions.

ANOTHER TELEPHONE SCAM HERE IN THE MORONGO BASIN
The scammers are at it again, targeting people locally with their con games. Managing Editor Karl Gardner has this scam warning…
A warning today, scam artists are working the phones in the Morongo basin, and a Wonder Valley man was almost a victim. The man, only identified as Daniel, said he received a phone call early this week, offering a $5000 government grant, all he had to do is wire $149 dollars in ‘processing fees’. The scamers told Daniel he needed to go the nearest Western Union Office and call back for an address to send the ‘processing fee’. Daniel recognized the ruse as a scam after the caller said his name was chosen since he’d never declared bankruptcy and always pays his taxes on time. Remember, government grants are never offered over the phone or via e-mail.

A BUSY MONTH FOR OUR DESERT MOON
One of the unique things we enjoy here in the desert is a clear view of our beautiful night skies. This month will be full of spectacular astronomical delights. Reporter Derwood Andrews says...
The Moon is busy this month, it will visit Jupiter on the 6th around 4:30 a.m. in the East and Venus on the 16th between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. The new Moon arrives on the 12th, but of coarse you can’t see that. The summer solstice is at 4:28 a.m. on the 21st of June and the beginning of three months of summer. The heat is on. Before that on the 5th and 6th you can spot a bright Mars, about one degree North of Regulus the brightest star in Leo. You’ll find that in the West about 9 p.m., just look for the reverse question mark. If your neighbors are kind enough to keep those lights off you may even catch a look at the space station whizzing by on the 23rd out of the Southwest at 9:51 at night. Lay back and enjoy the free show in the heavens.
