ECONOMIST SAYS CADIZ WATER PROJECT WOULD HELP ECONOMY
A regional expert is saying a proposal by Cadiz Inc. to use underground aquifers for Colorado water storage and recovery will be an economic boon to San Bernardino County. Reporter Dan Stork takes a close look at the report and the proposal...
Cadiz, Inc. is publicizing the release of a report that predicts the generation of $878 million in economic activity in San Bernardino County over 4 years, all resulting from the implementation of the Cadiz Valley Water Conservation, Recovery and Storage Project.  The economic impact report was prepared by Inland Empire economic expert John Husing.  The report says that an average of 1500 full-time equivalent jobs per year will be generated during the 4-year construction cycle for the project. The intent of the project is to pump Colorado River water into the aquifer underlying land owned by Cadiz, Inc, adding to existing groundwater reserves there.  The water could then be pumped from the aquifer in dry years, for use by southern California water agencies.  An earlier version of the project died in 2002, when the Metropolitan Water District canceled its participation in the face of economic and environmental objections. The project has been revived since 2008, with the Santa Margarita Water District taking the lead among the participating water agencies.  A Draft Environment Impact Report is being prepared now. For the company view of the project, visit cadizinc.com.  For a view that warns of environmental risks, visit chanceofrain.com, a water resources site, and search on “cadiz update.”
