15 MILLION DOLLAR MULTI-SPORTS COMPLEX OPENS AT COPPER MOUNTAIN COLLEGE
After some years of planning and delays, the 15 million-dollar Bell Multi Sports Complex was officially opened at a ceremony Sunday. Primary donor Leota Bell was awarded an honorary Associate in Arts degree as part of the event. Reporter Tami Roleff was there and files this report...
A crowd of about 200 people watched yesterday afternoon as Copper Mountain College’s new multi-use sports complex, known as the Bell Center, was dedicated during a ribbon cutting ceremony. The Bell Center was named after Leota Bell, and her late husband William who donated $1.5 million in seed money for the center. Board of Trustees President Owen Gillick thanked three people for their support of the center: the late Ada Hatch, whose daughter now serves on the Board of Trustees; Chris Frasier, who with the other Rotary Club presidents started the fundraising for the college three decades ago; and Leota Bell. "She was I think the prime mover, the main force behind this because she was there at the beginning and she stayed with it and maintained our enthusiasm and maintained our momentum over 3 decades actually." Unfortunately, Bell was unable to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony yesterday as she wasn’t feeling well. The Bell Center will be used for various sports and fitness activities and classes, as well as a place for theatrical and musical events, as well as exhibitions and receptions. The first event to be held at the Bell Center is a basketball game by the Harlem Ambassadors Tuesday evening.

COUNTY URGES LAW TO CURB UNDERAGE DRINKING
County supervisors are considering a new law that will clamp down on underage drinking. Called a "social-hosting ordinance," the law lays out criminal and civil penalties for party hosts who allow guests under 21 years of age to drink alcohol. If the law is passed, anyone hosting a party would have to "take all reasonable steps" to prevent minors from drinking alcohol. The law requires party hosts to check guests' IDs. The law also says that no gatherings shall continue if a host knows or should know that a minor has used alcohol or has not taken steps to prevent underage drinking. If supervisors pass the law, anyone who gives alcohol to minors could face a misdemeanor charge. Contributing to the delinquency of a minor is also a misdemeanor, but the ordinance under consideration also contains new civil penalties against party hosts. If a minor drinks alcohol at a party, the host can be held liable for whatever it costs for law enforcement to respond to the party. This penalty would also include county legal fees if there is litigation. The Board of Supervisors is scheduled to introduce the law during its meeting on Tuesday. The law would regulate parties in the county's unincorporated areas.
