WATER PICTURE IMPROVES
After three years of drought, California’s water picture is improving. The Mojave Water Agency, one of the state’s 29 water contractors said for the fourth time this year, the State Water Resources officials have raised water allocations from 30 to 40 percent, up dramatically from the 5 percent allocated in December. Department of Water Resources Director Mark Cowin said the spring storms this year have been good for the snow pack, allowing DWR to increase water deliveries. However Cowin added, the drought, low reservoirs and regulatory limits on Delta pumping to protect the Delta Smelt, have kept allocations at levels far below averages. Conservation remains the best method to preserve adequate water supplies across the state and here in the desert expert’s say.
