GIVE MOM THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH TODAY
COURTESY OF MOTHER NATURE AT KEYS VIEW OVERLOOK
On this Mother’s Day, we recommend you take Mom to the
monumental view we know as Keys View in Joshua Tree National
Park. Park Ranger Pat Pilcher says, it is not a
still-life------
Earth, Air and Water all move in southern California.
Visitors to Joshua Tree National Park can view all these
elements at the spectacular Keys View overlook. Mountain
peaks, valley expanses and the famous San Andreas fault form
the panorama at Keys View. These landscape features tell us
of the dynamic earth movements that characterize our area.
Water moves here too. The Salton Sea dominates the Coachella
Valley below Keys View and is a remnant of ancient lakes
that once filled the valley. Air also moves in this scene.
As the sun heats the desert floor, rising air currents bring
moisture upward from the Salton Sea resulting in haze later
in the day. This rising air is replaced by cool, dense air
from the Pacific Ocean that often brings smoggy days to the
park. Join a Ranger at Keys View between 10 am and noon to
discover this moving scenery.

OUR SERVICE PERSONNEL NEED OUR
TRANSPORTATION HELP
An estimated 500 Marines and Sailors come through the Palm
Springs Airport every month. There are only 3 scheduled bus
departure times daily to bring these soldiers to the 29
Palms base and no wheels on holidays. A taxi ride, one way
can cost a month’s salary. The Soldiers Organized Services
provides these soldiers with transportation, base to
airport, airport to base. Volunteers are needed. Give a
ride. Designate a day. Call Erica Stone at 799 5488. They
have about 100 volunteers now but they need more. Make the
call.

ASSEMBLYMAN PAUL COOK HAS TWO MORE BILLS
THAT HAVE EMERGED FROM COMMITTEE
Assemblyman Paul Cook has been shepherding two bills through
committee in Sacramento. Dan Stork says, two of them are
still climbing------
Assemblyman Paul Cook’s office has announced that two
more bills introduced by Cook have passed their respective
committees, this time unanimously, and can move on in the
legislature toward passage. AB 307 prohibits sex offenders
from operating ice cream trucks. This is the second time
around for Cook on this bill, who failed to get a similar
bill out of committee in 2008. AB 774 allows the creation
of a program whereby Riverside Community College District
students can ride public buses free. Funding for this
program will depend upon a majority of all students –
bus-riding or not – voting for a fee of up to $60 per
student per year to support this activity.

TONIGHT, JUST FOR MUTTERTAG, A CELESTIAL
GIFT
It’s a Mother’s Day celestial gift tonight, says Andromeda
Society sky-watcher, Sam Davidson. A space station,
super-bright, courtesy of reflected sunlight, will pass over
tonight. Coming out of the SSW at 8:25, going high onward
to the ENE, batting along at 5 miles per second. You can
tell Mom, YOU put that light up there just for her to smile.
