SHERIFF LOOKING INTO THEFTS USING STORE RECEIPTS
Sheriff’s detectives are looking into a series of crimes, where suspects used found store receipts to return merchandise. Sheriff’s reports say Thursday morning around noon, a deputy stopped a 1993 Jeep in Joshua Tree. In the jeep the deputy found a backpack filled with brass and copper plumbing fixtures and electrical hardware still in the original packaging. After investigating, the deputy checked with two local stores finding that suspects were picking up old sales receipts from parking lots, taking the exact same items off the shelf, then returning the goods for cash. The deputy took video surveillance tapes along with information obtained from the stores and turned it over to detectives for further investigation.

MORE TIPS FOR PREVENTING SCHOOL VIOLENCE
With concerns about school violence, the Sheriff’s Department is offering some ways to prevent it. Sheriff’s Safety Specialist Anita Baker joins us....
The Sheriff’s Department and the National Crime Prevention Council has some steps for parents to follow:
Get involved in the safety measures at your child’s school. Ask how the school controls access to visitors, know the emergency plans, and request periodic meetings to review school safety plans to identify holes or problems. Discourage name-calling and teasing. These behaviors often escalate into fist fights (or worse) whether the teasing is violent or not, the victim may see violence as the only way to stop it. Look for warming signs of a troubled teen. Also listen to and talk with your children regularly… find out what they are thinking on all kinds of topics. Create an opportunity for two-way conversation, which may mean forgoing judgments or pronouncements.
