LOCAL DEPUTIES GET EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE AWARDS
Morongo Basin Sheriff's deputies were among dozens of County employees and residents who were honored Thursday night at the Exceptional Service Awards ceremony in Rancho Cucamonga. The event honors San Bernardino County Sheriff deputies and others who work for the county. Among the honorees receiving Sheriff's Medals of Valor were Deputy Brandon Abell, who received two medals; Deputy Kristie Dougan; and Sergeant Trevis Newport. Deputy Erik Smoot was awarded the Sheriff's Medal for Meritorious Service, as was Twentynine Palms city employee Larry Bowden. Congratulations to all the winners.

24-HOUR RELAY FOR LIFE SET FOR SATURDAY MORNING START
The annual 24-hour Relay for Life fund-raiser to benefit the American Cancer Society starts tomorrow morning at 8 am. Event Chair Cathy Inscore said their goal is to raise $100,000 dollars and they are over half way there with $50,590. Reporter Mike Lipsitz says the relay events go on all day and night...
The annual Relay for Life lasts until a Sunday morning Closing Ceremony at 9 to be held at the Twentynine Palms Junior High School Track. At that time, participants will have been there for the cause for 24 hours. Various themed laps add interest and comic relief during the long night. At midnight, teams open the day with the Sling Shot Lap. We don't know what it is and apparently neither do the participants. At 1:30 a.m., the Relay Queen Lap follows the Relay Queen Pageant. Then at 2:30 a.m. is the Pajama Lap; teams, bring yours from home. At 4 a.m. is the Frisbee Lap, so be prepared to duck. At 6 a.m. teams will greet the rising sun with the Chicken Dance Lap followed by the last themed lap before Closing Ceremonies, the Bed Head Lap at 6:30. Don't brush it, just head to the track. Z107.7 is a major sponsor of the relay.

ONE ARREST FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
A Twentynine Palms man was arrested Wednesday night for hitting his girlfriend. Sheriff officials report that shortly before 11:30 p.m. they were notified that Dennis Smith, 49, was at his girlfriend's house in the 6700 block of Manzanita Avenue in Twentynine Palms when they began arguing. His girlfriend wanted him to leave, but he refused. Witnesses report that he pushed her and hit her in the face. The responding deputy determined that Smith was on felony probation. Dennis Smith was arrested for investigation of felony spouse abuse and booked at the Morongo Basin Jail with his bail set at $50,000.

TWO HURT IN TWO AREA CRASHES
A Joshua Tree man was hospitalized after a motorcycle accident in Yucca Valley Wednesday. According to the Sheriff's Department, Gary Scott was riding his 2004 Yamaha motorcycle eastbound on Highway 62 between Old Woman Springs Road and Airway Avenue about 3:50 p.m. When traffic in front of him stopped suddenly, Scott lost control of his motorcycle trying to avoid hitting the car in front of him. Scott and his motorcycle went down, and Scott suffered a broken collarbone. Gary Scott was taken by ambulance to Desert Hospital in Palm Springs.

A Yucca Valley woman suffered minor injuries when she lost control of her car and crashed it on Old Woman Springs Road Wednesday evening. According to a Sheriff's report, Brittany McFarland, 18, was driving southbound on Old Woman Springs Road about 6:40 p.m. Wednesday. Witnesses said McFarland was racing down the road trying to pass vehicles when she lost control, her 2001 Pontiac hit a curb and ended up on its side near the intersection with the Outer Highway. Brittany McFarland was taken to Hi-Desert Medical Center with complaints of pain and bruising from her seat belt.

EARTH DAY EVENT AT YUCCA VALLEY COMMUNITY CENTER TOMORROW
Z107-7 will be broadcasting live tomorrow from the annual Earth Day event at the Yucca Valley Community Center Complex. Reporter Derwood Andrews said the well-attended celebration has something for everyone...
Earth Day will be celebrated at the Hi-Desert Nature Museum on Saturday, 21st April from 9 until 2 in the afternoon. This FREE event is open to the whole family and includes demonstrations on gardening with native plants, composting and recycling, live music and dancing, animal presentations, local artists, environmental education resources and kids activities. PUBLIC HEARING ON YUCCA VALLEY SIGN REGULATIONS TUESDAY
The Yucca Valley Planning Commission has scheduled a public hearing next week on the Town's sign regulations. The hearing will be held Tuesday, April 24, at 6 p.m. at the Yucca Valley Community Center. The Town's sign regulations establish the maximum standards regarding the height, area, location, and number of signs, both permanent and temporary. Public participation and input on these regulations are a critical element of the successful outcome of the Development Code Update project. Those interested in learning more or providing input are encouraged to attend the Planning Commission meeting and participate in the development of the Town's future sign regulations. HI-DESERT ROD AND GUN CLUB EVENT AND BARBECUE TOMORROW

The Hi-Desert Rod and Gun Club will hold its annual Spring Fling Trap, Pistol, and Rifle Fundraiser and barbecue Sunday, April 22, from 8 to noon. Pistols will be shot at 25 yards; rifles at 50 yards. Shotgun events include a jump shoot, a slider shoot, handicap, doubles, and a quail walk, in which participants shoot at targets while walking. The cost to participate ranges from $5 to $10 per event. Shooters who have not pre-registered should arrive at the gun range at 8 a.m. The range is located at 8046 Yucca Park Road in Morongo Valley, 1 ½ miles from the top of the Yucca Grade in Morongo Valley, on the north side of the highway. Breaking Bread Ministry will be serving a free meal and fellowship tomorrow from 3-5 at the Little Church of the Desert Community Hall in Twentynine Palms. JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PARK VOCAL CONCERT SUNDAY
A very unique and free concert in Joshua Tree National Park this Sunday. Reporter Mike Lipsitz says the Park's Artist-in Residence, and some very special friends will be singing...
Visiting Artist-in-Residence Adam Tinkle will conduct a free musical performance this Sunday, April 22, at the Indian Cove Amphitheater within Joshua Tree National Park. Tinkle, a musician and composer working on his PhD at the University of California, San Diego, will lead an ensemble of almost twenty musicians hailing from around the state and as far away as New York and Denmark, in an all-acoustic concert of original musical compositions created during his current residency. The performance begins at 4 p.m. Audiences may come and go throughout this long-form performance as they wish. Due to limited parking at the Indian Cove Campground, free transportation will be provided from Indian Cove Market; arrive early, the shuttle leaves for the amphitheater at 3:30. LA CONTENTA MIDDLE SCHOOL DEBATE TEAMS IN COMPETITION THIS WEEKEND
The La Contenta Middle School Debate Tournament will be traveling Saturday to the Debate National Competition at Claremont McKenna College, in Claremont. Four teams, 12 students total from La Contenta Middle School, will be competing with 83 teams from all over the nation.

COPPER MOUNTAIN COLLEGE DEBATER BRINGS HONE A MEDAL
A Copper Mountain College student brought home a medal in a national speech and debate competition, and four other students were at the top of the rankings. Dylan Tandoi, competing against 100 other students, brought home the bronze medal in the Impromptu Speaking division. Alvin Primack and Matt Evans were only 1 point away from the semi-finals for their Informative Speeches. Primack was 1 point short, and Krystina Noel Mason was 2 points shorts of making the Extemporaneous Speaking semi-finals, and Evans was 2 points from the poetry semi-finals. Also competing was Amelia Dutt. CMC speech professor and team coach Reyna Valarde said the Copper Mountain College speech and debate students are among the top 30 percent in the nation. This was the first time Copper Mountain College students had participated in the National Compeition in Illinois. The trip was sponsored by the Copper Mountain College Foundation.

RED CROSS BABYSITTER TRAINING IN YUCCA VALLEY MONDAY

An American Red Cross Babysitter Training class will be conducted at the Yucca Valley Community Center on Monday, April 23, in conjunction with a Child and Infant CPR class on Tuesday, April 24. The course is intended for youth ages 11 to 17 and has been newly revised based on input from young people. This course provides an excellent opportunity to develop leadership and communication skills as well as learn how to supervise children and infants, perform basic child-care, care for common injuries, communicate effectively with parents, and write a resume and design business cards. Those interested in participating are required to pre-register at the Yucca Valley Community Center and pay a $50 fee for the Babysitter Training or a $75 fee for the Babysitter Training and Child and Infant CRP. HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS AND SCHEDULES
The Twentynine Palms High School Wildcat Golf Team improved their league record to 7-3, winning their last three league matches, with wins over Yucca Valley High School, 247-274 last Thursday, and Desert Hot Springs, Tuesday, 244-284. Coach Grant Whipple said the top scorers Tuesday were Daniel Douglas, 42; Drew Jarvis, 45; and Ty Lueken, 48. Thursday, the 'Cats took on Big Bear High School coming away sole possession of second place in the DeAnza League with a 234-263 win, top scores were Andy Whipple, 43; Drew Jarvis, 45; and Morgan Cole, 47.

In high school sports tomorrow, the Yucca Valley High School Trojan track team will be competing in the Mount San Antonio College Relays. The Trojan swim team will travel away to Palm Springs. The first event begins at 9.

The Twentynine Palms High School Wildcat track team will compete in the Inland Empire Championships at Vista Murrieta High School.
