FORMER UNION OFFICIAL USES STOLEN CARD IN FORGERY DEFENSE
A former federal employee's union official arrested in November for forging checks was arrested again Wednesday for using a stolen credit card to pay her attorney's fees for her forgery case. Harriet Sullivan, 51, was the treasurer of the American Federation of Government Employees Union, Local 2018, aboard the Twentynine Palms Marine Base when she was arrested at the base commissary where she worked last November for forging checks. Sheriff's investigators say after her arrest, Sullivan stole a Marine officer's credit card information to pay her attorney's fees for her forgery case. Sheriff officials say she also used the card to pay her insurance. Sullivan was in Joshua Tree Superior Court Wednesday morning for a pre-preliminary conference on the forgery charge, which was continued to May 2. Later that afternoon, Harriet Sullivan was arrested at the union's office on the base for investigation of fraudulent use of a credit card. She was booked at the Morongo Basin Jail with her bail set at $75,000.

MAXIMUM ENFORCEMENT, DUI CHECKPOINT, THIS HOLIDAY WEEKEND
The Sheriff's Department says everybody may be Irish on St. Patrick's Day but nobody should drive drunk after celebrating this Saturday. With maximum enforcement, Police, Sheriff and CHP officers will have a "zero tolerance" response toward impaired drivers who fail to use a designated sober driver. Law enforcement recommends the following easy steps for a safe St. Patrick's Day. Plan a safe way home before the festivities begin and designate a sober driver. If you see a drunk driver on the road, call 911. If you know people who are about to drive or ride while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.
A DUI checkpoint will be held Saturday night in Twentynine Palms. Starting at 7 p.m. and going until 3 a.m. Sunday morning, the Twentynine Palms Police Department will conduct a DUI/driver's license checkpoint at an undisclosed location. Officers will be stopping drivers at the checkpoint and looking for signs of alcohol or drug impairment, as well as proper licensing. Drunk or impaired drivers can expect to go to jail and have their driver's license suspended. Along with increased insurance costs, impaired drivers will be hit with fines, fees, DUI classes, and other expenses that can exceed $10,000. The Sheriff's Department reminds people, Don't drink and drive.

A REMINDER ABOUT CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS
Carbon Monoxide has been determined to be a serious household risk, and a new law requires detectors. Managing editor Tami Roleff has the reminder...
As of July of last year, all single-family homes in California are required by law to have a carbon monoxide detector installed to prevent accidental deaths. The danger of carbon monoxide is that it is a colorless, odorless gas, which causes headaches, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, confusion, unconsciousness, and ultimately death. Carbon monoxide detectors sound an alarm whenever the gas reaches a certain level. Fire Captain Steve Lasiter of the Joshua Tree fire station urges residents to call 911 if their detectors go off, and firefighters will check the residence for the presence of carbon monoxide.
