JOSHUA TREE WOMAN SCAMMED RENTING HOUSE OFF INTERNET
Just because it is on the Internet, doesn't mean it is legitimate. Managing Editor Tami Roleff says a Joshua Tree woman learned that lesson the hard way...
A Joshua Tree woman is out $600 because she tried to rent a house from someone who wasn't the home's owner. According to the Sheriff's department, an unidentified woman responded to an online advertisement for a house to rent in Twentynine Palms. The supposed owner had the victim wire $600 to Missouri. The victim then went to the home in Twentynine Palms and saw a For Rent sign with a different telephone number. When she called the number, she found out that she had sent the money to someone who was not the home's owner. The Sheriff's Department offers the following tips to avoid being scammed: Don't rent a house off the Internet without first meeting with the property owner. Never wire money anywhere. Check County Records to make sure the person renting the house is actually the homeowner. And finally, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
