The star/crescent combinations in prehistoric rock art in the American Southwest are broadly accepted as eyewitness records of the AD 1054, supernova explosion. Since the 1950’s, the interpretation of these sites as astronomical archaeological records have become common. In 1973, Dr. E.C. Krupp, Director of the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles began studying these sites. In 2008, his fieldwork eventually led to two sites in northern Arizona. These sites have not been revisited for 50 years. In this lecture, Dr. Krupp will discuss the best-known star/crescent sites and report his findings. Sponsored by the Desert Institute at Joshua Tree National Park, this lecture will be held at the Black Rock Visitor Center in Yucca Valley on Friday, March 19, from 7 to 8 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public. Assemblyman Paul Cook of Yucca Valley was recognized as Legislator of the Year 2009 by the Association of Northern California Oncologists and the Medical Oncology Association of Southern California. The honor was given to Assemblyman Cook for his work on Assembly Bill 830, which allows for cancer-treating physicians to utilize a large list of off-label drugs in their work. Otherwise known as compendia, this list of off-label drugs are used to prescribe medication for treating a disease or condition that is outside the scope of a drug’s original approved use.
