TWENTYNINE PALMS MARINE KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN
The Department of Defense announced the death of a Twentynine Palms based Marine who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. Lance Corporal Joshua Birchfield, 24, of Westville, Indiana, died Friday while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment.

BODY OF LAKE HAVASU MAN FOUND NEAR TWENTYNINE PALMS
The body of a Lake Havasu City man has been found near Twentynine Palms. Lake Havasu police say 76-year-old James Seaton had been reported missing February 6th, he was last seen February 2nd. Human remains were found on Wheeler Road north of Brant Crossing Road Friday at 11:15 a.m. and subsequently identified as Seaton. Deputies searched the area, North of the city limits, and just West of the main-side area of the Twentynine Palms Marine base, and found his van about a half mile west of the remains. February 20 members of the County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue Team conducted a search of the area for additional evidence. Additional human remains were located. It appeared that James Seaton had become lost in the remote area and his van became stuck in some soft dirt, Arizona authorities say he suffered from dementia. Authorities say no foul play is suspected, but an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death.

FREE H1N1 FLU VACCINE CLINIC TOMORROW IN YUCCA VALLEY
The local Red Cross chapter is giving a free H1N1 flu vaccinations to all residents tomorrow. ROP broadcast student Dan Parker has the details...
A free clinic for the H1N1 flu vaccine will be held Wednesday, February 24 from noon to 3 at the Red Cross office on Business Center Dr. in Yucca Valley. There is no charge, no pre-registration, nor any residency requirement. The vaccine is available to everyone over 6 months of age; however, all children under 18 years must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The American Red Cross, Morongo Basin Chapter, is sponsoring the free immunization. For information call 760 365-5501.

FREE H1NI VACCINE IN TWENTYNINE PALMS THIS EVENING
Free H1N1 flu vaccinations will be given out in Twentynine Palms tonight. The inoculations will be given to all residents from 5-7 this evening at Twentynine Palms High School.

JOSHUA TREE WOMAN ARRESTED FOR DUI AFTER CRASH
Friday, February 19, at about 6:40 p.m., Jennifer Belle, 28, of Joshua Tree was driving a 2006 Nissan Armada, eastbound on State Route 62 just east of Sunny Vista Road. The Nissan had been reported as a possible DUI driver, speeding in excess of 85 miles per hour, by a concerned citizen via cellular telephone. The Nissan rapidly approached the rear of another vehicle within the eastbound slow lane, and collided into the a 1998 Chevrolet Lumina sedan driven by Charlotte Anderson, 64 of Joshua Tree. The rear-end collision resulted in the severe injury of Anderson and her right front passenger, Stephen Anderson, 63, also of Joshua Tree. Both Mrs. and Mr. Anderson were transported to Hi-Desert Medical Center. Mrs. Anderson was promptly airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center with life threatening injuries. Belle complained of minor pain and was transported to the Hi-Desert Medical Center, was treated and released to the CHP. Jennifer Belle was arrested for suspicion of felony driving under the influence of alcohol booked into the Morongo Basin Jail and held on $100,000 bail.

TWENTYNINE PALMS CITY COUNCIL SET TO BAN MEDICAL MARIJUANA, SETS 3 PUBLIC HEARINGS
A busy session for the Twentynine Palms City Council tonight. The council is expected to completely ban medical marijuana and then will hold three public hearings. Reporter Dan Stork takes a closer look at the City Council’s agenda...
At its regular meeting on Tuesday February 23rd, the Twentynine Palms City Council is scheduled to finalize the prohibition of medical marijuana facilities as part of the consent agenda. The first of three public hearing concerns the Redevelopment Agency’s 5-year Implementation Plan, and the 10-year Housing Compliance Plan. Another hearing is about new code procedures for unclaimed or abandoned property, while the third treats code amendments on telecommunication antenna placement and sea-going cargo containers. In other business, council will hear a Mid-Year Financial Update and a report about a proposed position for an Economic-Development-Redevelopment Specialist. It will also hear a staff recommendation for a policy about commercial bins on residential properties. Finally, staff will recommend that the council sign on to a resolution requesting that the California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 be revised, or suspended in its implementation, as being too costly in the current economic climate. The meeting starts at 6 p.m. in Council chambers on Adobe Road in Twentynine Palms.

YUCCA VALLEY PLANNING COMMISSION TO REORGANIZE TONIGHT, EXTENSIONS ON TAP

The Yucca Valley Planning Commission will meet at 7:00 tonight in the Yucca Room of the Community Center. First up on the agenda is the election of a new chair and vice-chair of the Commission. The planning Commission will then hold yet another public hearing about the Native Plant ordinance. Next up, the commissioners will hear two requests for time extensions: one for a mini-storage facility on the northwest corner of Sun Oro Rd and Old Woman Springs Road and the other for an expansion to an office building at 7211 Joshua Lane. Finally, the Commission will hear an update on private land development in the Town.

ADULT BOOK GROUP TONIGHT, LISTEN TOMORROW, AT YUCCA VALLEY LIBRARY
This evening at 6:15, the Adult Book Group at the Yucca Valley Library will meet to discuss Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, a novel by Jamie Ford. This historical novel alternates between the 1940’s and 1984. Join them for a lively discussion of this interesting novel. The selection for March is Undomestic Goddess by Sophie Kinsella. FOSTER PARENT ORIENTATION TOMORROW
An orientation for those who are interested in finding out more on how to be a foster parent will be held tomorrow. Reporter Dan Stork joins us again...
Yucca Valley Children and Family Services would like to recruit more people willing to be foster parents. To that end, it is holding a Foster Parent Orientation on Wednesday February 24th, from 10 a.m. to noon, at 56311 Pima Trail in Yucca Valley. TWENTYNINE PALMS LITTLE LEAGUE TAKING SIGN-UPS
Twentynine Palms Little League sign-ups are still being accepted. You can sign up Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 4 Sports-N-More located at 5808 Adobe Road or on Saturdays at the Junior High and High School during the youth basketball games. Cost is $50 for the first child, $45 for the second and $40 for each additional child. Evaluations will be held this Saturday and Sunday, at Luckie Park.
