HI-DESERT WATER DISTRICT GETS EXPANDED SEWER AUTHORITY
The Local Agency Formation Commission – approved expanding Hi-Desert Water District’s sewering authority to include collection, treatment, reclamation, and disposal. Previously, the water district could only plan and engineer the project and with the newly-granted authority can now move forward with the construction and operation of the Wastewater Treatment and Water Reclamation Project. Joseph Glowitz, District Engineer said, "we still have a lot of work to do, but this is a huge milestone in formalizing authority of the project. Next steps include the Assessment District formation, survey and mapping, final design and construction." This authorization will also open up more grant opportunities for Hi-Desert Water District, as it searches for ways to fund the costly project. SCOUT RANGER PROGRAM
Joshua Tree National Park and Scouting seems like a natural partnership. Ranger Pat Pilcher will tell us about a program that brings the two together...
The National Park Service has established the Resource Stewardship Scout Program in partnership with the Boy Scouts of America, This "Scout Ranger" program is a part of the "Good Turn for America" Scout initiative and is designed to increase scout visitation to the national parks. It also educates young people about their responsibility to preserve our natural and cultural resources and encourages them to volunteer their services. Through this program, Scouts can earn a unit certificate and an individual patch based upon their service projects. Joshua Tree National Park would like to encourage area Scouts to earn their Scout Ranger patch by attending regularly scheduled Park programs, and participating in volunteer events such as Parks Across America, National Public Lands Day, and ongoing Park projects including weed pulls and trash pickup. For more information on volunteer projects at the park, contact Laureen Lentz, at 760-367-5524. For z107.7, this is Park Ranger Pat Pilcher reminding you to visit your national parks – America’s best idea.

ROTARY COFFEE SALES TO BENEFIT CLEAN WATER
Local Rotary Clubs are selling organic coffee, as part of a Rotary Foundation fundraising project that will benefit both local clubs and world-wide clean water initiatives. The coffee comes from Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, which supplies coffee for Newman’s Own Organics and others. Green Mountain offsets 100% of its direct greenhouse gas emission, and donates at least 5% of its pre-tax profits to social and environmental projects. The coffee is free trade coffee, which means that farmers get a guaranteed minimum price for their crop, allowing them to invest in their communities. The coffee is being offered at $10 per bag, which is cheaper than the Internet price, with shipping. After the end of March, $3 from each bag will be retained by the local club, 25 cents will go to the Rotary Foundation to fund international clean water projects, and 32 cents goes to Rotary International. Until the end of March, participating Rotary clubs in the Morongo Basin, as part of a pilot program for this effort, will be getting the coffee for free, and will get to keep all proceeds other than the portion set aside for the sponsoring organizations. For more information, call Yucca Valley Rotary president Shannon Luckino at 760-365-0444.
