SCHOOL DISTRICT SAVING ON ENERGY BILLS
Facing dire fiscal constraints, the Morongo Unified School District has been looking as unique ways to save money on its energy bills. Reporter Dan Stork has more...
The necessity of cutting expenses in the face of the continuing state fiscal crisis has been the mother of inventing ways to economize on electricity, in the Morongo Unified School District. Assistant Superintendent and Chief Business Officer Michael Walker listed ways that the District has been able to save money on its energy bills. The number of personal refrigerators, microwave ovens and the like has been cut by over half. Copiers have been replaced by lower-energy models, and the same is being done for printers. There’s a new policy to turn off computers and electronic devices at the end of each day, plus a program that automatically upgrades and then turns off all computers every Friday evening. A consultant reviewed the District’s utility bills to ensure it’s getting the lowest possible legal rates. In a move that has a "Back to the Future" feel, the District is changing over from traditional desk top computers to systems from Ncomputing that allows many terminals to be run by a single computer, which significantly reduces the electric bill. Blade servers and thin client computers are other low-energy approaches that have been implemented. In the wake of these changes, the District’s electricity bill dropped by over $184,000 for the quarter ending September 30 of 2009, compared with the previous year.
