HOMES EVACUATED IN PARADISE VALLEY AFTER HAZ MAT SCARE
Some tense monuments in Paradise Valley Friday night after residents and sheriff’s deputies were exposed to an unknown substance. Officials said around 7 Friday evening, Sheriffs’ Deputy Marylee Brown respond to a medical aid call on Indio Avenue. After speaking to a woman who complained of burning eyes and skin, Brown learned that the victim lived in the 6300 Block of Richard Drive, and determined the source of the irritation, described as smoke, came from an area just north of the woman’s home, possibly from an abandoned apartment building. After evacuating several nearby houses, and treating 8 people, including 2 deputies, firefighters assisted by a Haz Mat team from the Marine Base Fire Department, made an initial survey and found no signs of tear gas, pepper spray, or other contaminants. A second evaluation was done, and by 11 p.m. Fire Chief Kat Oplinger said what ever caused the contamination had dissipated, and the scene was declared safe. Those evacuated were allowed to go home.
