OFFICER HIT BY FLEEING CAR, SHOOTS AT DRIVER
More details in a CHP Officer involved shooting Friday morning. CHP Spokesman Rob McCloud said about 4:30 a.m. two officer California Highway Patrol spied a Jeep matching the description of a suspected stolen vehicle. The suspect, identified as Rody Bond, 29, of Brawley came to a stop in the driveway of a house in the 56000 block of Sunnyslope Drive. The Jeep turned toward the patrol car and sped up hitting the patrol car and officer. Both officers fired their weapons at Bond. The jeep then crashed into a Joshua Tree. Bond attempted to flee on foot, but was apprehended by both officers after a brief foot pursuit. Bond was taken into custody and transported to the Hi-Desert Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries then being booked into Morongo Basin Jail, and held on an no bail parole hold. The injured officer was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center, treated for minor injuries, and released. He is expected to make a full recovery. The San Bernardino County Sheriff, is conducting the criminal investigation.

1 MINOR INJURY IN VIOLENT MULTI-CAR CRASH IN MORONGO VALLEY
Just one minor injury in a violent, 3-car crash at the bottom of the Yucca Grade yesterday morning. CHP Public Information officer Rob McCloud said at about 8:25, Elizabeth Cash, 19, of Morongo Valley, was driving her 1995 Honda, eastbound on SR-62 at or above the posted speed limit. Cash failed to heed warning, did not slow down, hit an area of standing water, and hydroplaned across the eastbound lanes. She entered the westbound fast lane and sideswiped a 1990 GMC pick-up truck being driven by Paul Argetsinger, 52, of Yucca Valley. The Honda continued into the westbound slow lane where it collided head-on into a big-rig tractor trailer vehicle, driven by Jaime Zavala, 34, of Whittier. The GMC pick-up and big rig came to rest across the eastbound lanes and shoulder. The Honda came to rest within the center two-way left turn lane. Cash, Argetsinger, and Zavala were all wearing their seat belts. The Honda Civic driven by. Cash was severely damaged on all sides. Due to the use of seat belts, there were only minor scrapes and bruises to Elizabeth Cash. She was transported to Desert Hospital in Palm Springs. McCloud said Eastbound traffic was affected for approximately two hours while emergency crews attended to injuries, investigated the collision, and cleared the roadway of damaged vehicles.

TWENTYNINE PALMS SPEEDERS BEWARE IN ADOBE ROAD CONSTRUCTION ZONE

Speeders beware. The Twentynine Palms Traffic Deputy has given out several $600 speeding tickets, and will issue more, if motorist don’t heed the warning, and slow down in the Construction Zone on Adobe Road. Deputy Curtis Kolb said the speed limit in the road widening construction zone is 35 mile per hour. Kolb said officers are having "major" problems with both military and civilian traffic speeding, and remind everyone under state law, anyone convicted of speeding in construction areas, can and do have their fines doubled.

YUCCA VALLEY WOMAN LOSES $20,000.00 IN INTERNET SCAM
A Yucca Valley woman, stung by an infamous "You won a cash Prize" scam, quit sending money, then began receiving death threats. Sheriffs officials said Wednesday afternoon about 3:30, Deputies went to the woman home in the 3600 block of Condalia Avenue in Yucca Valley after she began receiving threatening e-mails. The woman said she recently accepted an e-mail offer that said she won a lot of money, but to get the cash, she had to send money for "administrative processing". Sheriffs officials say she sent around $20,000 to Nigeria, and when she stopped, she began getting text messages from someone identified as Dr. Ambrose Dery saying that if she did not send more, "they were going to kill her", and "I know were you live". Officials said last week an elderly Yucca Valley man fell prey to a similar scam. This warning once again, if you received an unsolicited message saying you won money, but you need to send cash to collect... it’s a scam.

INJURED WOMAN FOUND IN HER CAR, IN JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK INDIAN COVE AREA
A Twentynine Palms woman who said she fell, was injured and lost in the Indian Cove area of Joshua Tree National Park, was eventually located in her car Wednesday. Park Spokesman Joe Zarki said about 8 am, Tina Savanowicz 42, called on her cell phone saying she had fallen, inured herself and was lost. Twentynine Palm Fire, Sheriff’s personnel and Joshua Tree Search and Rescue fanned out in an attempt to find her, Savanowicz was unable to explain where she was. Using her cell phone’s signal, officials were able to triangulate the Savanowicz’s position to within a one and one half-mile area of Indian Cove Camp Ground. Park Ranger Sara Cowell was able to determine the make of Savanowicz’s vehicle, and found it parked in the Indian Cove parking lot with Savanowicz inside. Investigators said due to a head injury from the fall, Savanowicz had an altered level of consciousness, returned to her car not realizing were she was. Tina Savanowicz was taken to Hi Desert Medical Center for treatment.

COLLEGE BOARD APPROVES 2 AGREEMENTS
The Copper Mountain College Board met yesterday in regular session. Reporter Tami Roleff says the approved 2 agreements...
At yesterday’s meeting of the Copper Mountain College Board of Trustees, the trustees approved agreements with two other community college districts that will benefit CMC students at no cost to the college. The board approved an instructional agreement with the Yosemite Community College District, Child Development Training Consortium which will run through June 30. Under the agreement, CMC students who are enrolled in the Early Childhood Education program and who meet certain criteria will be reimbursed a portion of their education costs by the Yosemite Community College District. The other agreement is with the San Bernardino Community College District. SBCCD has created a web service and web-access portal that can link students and faculty to digital media, such as live-streaming video of classes. The San Bernardino Community College District wants to make its web services available to schools, and so is offering it free of charge. According to Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs Cheryl Munsey, the program is upping the ante of what Copper Mountain College can use in its classrooms. |

"Yucca Valley the Diamond of the Desert" is the theme for this year’s Grubstake Days Parade. The Yucca Valley Chamber of Commerce seeks artwork that reflects the "Diamond of the Desert" theme for the community celebration’s commemorative pin. The winning artist will be the Chamber’s guest in the May 29th Grubstake Days parade, now in its 60th year. Help the Chamber make this year’s celebration the most memorable ever. Submit your artwork to the Yucca Valley Chamber of Commerce no later than noon on Friday, February 19th. Condor Elementary School onboard the Twentynine Palms Marine Base, is one of 14 County Schools to win state Title 1 academic recognition, State Superintendent of Schools Jack O’Connell announced Thursday. The achievement signifies the tremendous accomplishment made by Condor’s staff, teachers and students said County Superintendent Gary Thomas. Condor Elementary School is one of the 238 schools statewide to be recognized, out of nearly 6000 eligible.

TWENTYNINE PALMS BASKETBALL WINS DE ANZA LEAGUE FOR 5TH STRAIGHT YEAR
The Twentynine Palms High School Wildcats Basketball squad won their 5th de Anza League Championship in a row last night. The Wildcats and Big Bear Bears boy's basketball teams came into the game with identical 6-1 records. With the league championship on the line both teams came out and played inspired hard nose basketball before a loud and vocal packed house. After a back and forth game the Wildcats pulled away for a 57 to 46 victory. Senior Robert Caldwell led the Cats with 12 points followed by Anderson with 11 and Chris Fui Fui and Osbaldo Chavez each scoring 8. The victory guaranteed a first round home game in the CIF playoffs with the date and time to be announced on Sunday.

JOSHUA SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL BOYS WIN, GIRLS LOSE
Joshua Springs basketball teams traveled to their last regular season game to take on the Apple Valley Christian Warriors last night. The girls lost a nail-biter, and the boys won comfortably. In the boys’ game, the Lightning defeated the Warriors 42-36. The Lightning have won 6 of 8, including 3 in a row, to close the regular season at 9-10, and 6-4 in the Agape League. The Lightning boys earned a playoff spot, and the game will be announced Sunday, Feb. 14th. The Lady Lightning closed out their regular season at 8-15, going 2-8 in league play by losing another tough game to the Apple Valley Warriors 40-38.
