SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT ON DUI SATURATION PATROL THIS WEEKEND
The Sheriff’s Department will be watching drivers very closely with extra deputies over this SuperBowl weekend. Managing editor Karl Gardner says they are mounting a DUI saturation patrol...
It will be maximum DUI enforcement this SuperBowl Sunday. Sheriff Rod Hoops said DUI saturation patrols will be out in force Sunday, targeting drunk drivers. Hoops said drunk driving is a top priority for deputies, but everyone who is hosting a party could have one of the best defenses there is against drunk drivers; designating sober drivers. If you are hosting a Super Bowl party remember you can be held liable if someone you served ends up ina DUI related crash; so have your guests designate sober drivers in advance. If you don’t have a designated driver, ask a friend for a ride home, call a cab or have family member to come and get you. Remember, Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk.

JOSHUA TREE CHAMBER MOVING NEXT TO Z107-7 STUDIOS
Z107-7 has a new next door neighbor. The Joshua Tree Chamber of Commerce opens the doors to its new home at 6448 Hallee Road, Suites 9 and 10, Monday. The new space, across the street from the Joshua Tree Post Office and next door to the Z107.7 Radio Studios, offers easy access from Highway 62 and ample parking. Chamber Executive Director Barbara Waddle says a large, airy visitor reception area will soon be stocked with information on lodging, dining, shopping, art and music, local businesses and attractions, and Joshua Tree National Park. A conference room, private executive office and workspace for staff and volunteers assure that the new Joshua Tree Chamber headquarters will be a hub of activity for the local business community. Waddle said the move would not have been possible without the help of many area businesses who gave generously to help complete renovations in record time. The Chamber office will be open five days a week, from 9:00-3:00 on Monday, Thursday and Friday, and 9:00-4:00 on Tuesday and Wednesday. Field Representative of Third District Supervisor Neil Derry, Alan Rasmussen, will maintain office hours in Joshua Tree two days a week: Wednesday afternoon and all day Friday. Chamber phone and fax numbers remain the same, although some service disruption may occur during the first week after the move.

TWENTYNINE PALMS CITY COUNCIL PART 1, MASTER PLAN DETAILS, MONDAY, ORV ISSUES
At a special meeting last night, the Twentynine Palms City Council finished up what was left over from a marathon meeting earlier this week, it was another marathon. Reporter Dan Stork breaks his report into two parts, today, water treatment, new industrial areas, and a downtown bypass. On Monday, the contentious issue of off-highway vehicle activity...
The Twentynine Palms City Council took nearly 4 hours to work through the General Plan Update items left over from its previous meeting. It elected to proceed with planning for a water treatment facility that will begin by serving downtown and adjacent residential areas.

Announced Council candidate Jay Corbin said that there is no indication that the city is going to be required to implement central water treatment. But the sitting Council appeared to be swayed by arguments that commercial, industrial, and residential developers shun communities that lack centralized water treatment. Council’s reaction to recommendations concerning new industrial and commercial areas was mixed. It favored the plan for an expanded commercial area near Stater Brothers, but disapproved a tourist commercial area west of Lear on the highway. It took City Manager Michael Tree’s advice to reinstate an industrial zone designation, rejected by Planning Commission, of an area south of Amboy Road and west of Bullion Mountain Road. With regard to the circulation plan, the Council approved long-term planning for a bypass of downtown from west of the city to Amboy Road, but rejected a recommendation to pave Sherman Hoyt Road. It agreed with the Planning Commission’s rejection of a development buffer along Marine Corps Base border. The reason: Land uses in that area are too diverse to be readily compatible with a zoning overlay. By far the most contentious issue was Off Highway Vehicle activity. We’ll tell you about that in a separate report.
