LAST MINUTE WARNING SAVES SHERIFFS DEPUTY
A shout at the last second saved a Sheriffs Deputy from being run over by a woman suspected of driving under the influence. California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Brewer said Friday morning at 2:12 CHP Officers Josh Cavolt and Randy O’Brien were parked along side the right shoulder of State Route 62 near Sunfair Road assisting Sheriff’s Deputy Adam Griswold. Griswold was standing on the right shoulder when O’Brien looked to the rear and saw a vehicle heading towards them at traveling about 65 miles per hour on the right shoulder, bearing down on them directly in the path of the CHP patrol car and the Deputy. At the last minute, Officer O’Brien yelled a warning to Griswold, who to jump up on the hood of the CHP patrol car avoiding the oncoming car. Officers Cavolt and O’Brien along with and Deputy Griswold pursued the vehicle and were able to stop it a short time later. Following an investigation, Melissa Speer, 32 of Joshua Tree was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Speer was also charged with possession of a controlled substance and child endangerment, having her eleven-year-old son along as a passenger at the time. Melissa Speer was booked in the West Valley Detention Center and held on $25,000 bail.

HIKE TO BARKER DAM
The balmy winter days make hiking in Joshua Tree National Park both pleasant and rewarding. Park Ranger Pat Pilcher joins us with more...
This year, the winter season at Joshua Tree National Park offers visitors an opportunity to see a piece of local history while enjoying the desert landscape. The one-mile, loop trail to Barker dam, is a pleasant hike located in the park’s Wonderland of Rocks. The dam, a concrete structure built over a hundred years ago, was a critical reservoir for early cattlemen who depended on the stored water for their livestock. Since the park recorded only one inch of rainfall last year, the dam site is now dry but, if this winter brings significant rainfall, visitors to the dam have an excellent opportunity to see Bighorn sheep, desert tortoise and migratory birds looking for a drink. As you venture along the trail, watch for the large and fragrant Juniper, Pinyon Pine and Joshua trees scattered through the area. For additional information, call park headquarters at 760 367-5500.
