STILL H1N1 FLU IN OUR REGION, VACCINE WIDELY AVAILABLE
Our region of the state is the only one still reporting outbreaks of H1N1 flu, according to the California Department of Public Health. Dr. Gil Chavez, the state epidemiologist, said Thursday that the number of cases reported by the public health departments in Riverside and San Bernardino counties requires that the Inland area still be categorized as a widespread outbreak area. He said more than 65 residents in Riverside and San Bernardino counties have died from the disease since April when swine flu first was identified. Statewide, an estimated 8,400 residents have become ill from the disease; 479 have died. The public health departments in Riverside and Bernardino counties are now offering free swine flu vaccines to everyone who wants them. San Bernardino County's public health officer Dr. Maxwell Ohikhuare, said his department is reaching out to any group that wants to hold a vaccination clinic. "We're out to vaccinate everybody." "The longer you wait to seek care, the more likely you are to get a complicated disease," he said. "This is the time you actually need to get vaccinated."

NEW COLLEGE TRAFFIC LIGHT WILL BLOCK DIRT ROAD
The Copper Mountain College Board met in regular session yesterday. Reporter Tami Roleff says the board heard details of a new traffic light on the highway...
Progress is being made toward the installation of a traffic signal at Rotary Way and Twentynine Palms Highway in Joshua Tree. Opposite Rotary Way on the south side of the highway is Copper Mesa Road, a dirt road. After determining that there are no land parcels in the area that would be denied access to the highway if Copper Mesa Road was blocked at the highway, the Copper Mountain College Board of Trustees approved a change order that would change the traffic signal from a 4-way light to a 3-way light. The entrance to Copper Mesa Road from the highway will be blocked with a curb, and CalTrans will be approached about putting in a more substantial barrier to block the road. Residents in the area will have to use either Old Copper Mountain Road or El Rey Avenue to gain access to Copper Mesa Road.

 BLOOD DONOR WINS NEW PRIUS
Blood Donors respond to low blood donations during winter months and 1 lucky donor won a new Prius. During the winter months when blood donations are typically low, donors came out to give the gift of life – with an added bonus. The Drive Green with LifeStream promotion made one lucky LifeStream blood donor the owner of a new, fuel-efficient Toyota Prius. Over 27,000 donors gave blood during the promotion which ran October 3 through December 1 – many not knowing LifeStream was offering this promotion. That’s exactly what happened when Loma Linda University nursing student Melina Nava of Rancho Cucamonga was notified that she won the Toyota Prius. "I give blood because I want to help, that’s all," said Nava. She said, "As a nursing student, I understand how critical it is to give blood and I like to help out any way I can." LifeStream would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who donated and encourages people to give the gift of life by donating blood.
