PLEA DEAL MADE IN DUI CAUSING DEATH OF DECORATED MARINE
A Twentynine Palms man facing 3 felony charges stemming from the death of a Marine killed while riding his motorcycle, took a plea bargain during a court hearing last month. Joel Cohoe, 21, pleaded guilty to one count of, “Felony DUI over .08 percent blood alcohol causing injury” during a preliminary hearing December 15. He now faces up to four years in State Prison. Sheriffs’ investigators said November 5, Cohoe was driving southbound on Indian Cove Road just north of State Route 62 at about 6:30 p.m. He came to a stop, but then pulled out in front of 25 year old Omar Salazar, a Marine stationed at the Twentynine Palms Marine Base, riding westbound on his 2008 Yamaha motorcycle. Salazar, a highly decorated Combat Marine who had just returned from deployment to Afghanistan, was unable to stop and slammed into Cohoe’s car. He was taken to Hi- Desert Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Joel Cohoe was facing Vehicular Manslaughter, DUI causing injury and DUI causing injury along with the DUI over .08 percent blood alcohol causing injury. Sentencing is set for January 24.

CHP RECOGNIZES NATIONAL AMBER ALERT AWARENESS DAY
Today is national Amber Alert Day. Managing Editor Karl Gardner says it marks a sad anniversary that started a valuable program...
California joins other states nationwide in recognizing today, January 13th, as National AMBER Alert Awareness Day, a day to acknowledge the collaborative efforts and successes of the AMBER Alert program to assist in the recovery of abducted children. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the abduction and murder of Amber Hagerman and the program that was named in her memory. At the time, there was no system in place to inform and alert the public of the abduction. Residents contacted area radio stations in the wake of this tragedy and suggested that a special alert be in place for child abductions. Today, there are AMBER Alert programs in all 50 states, and to date, there have been 213 children safely recovered following 174 AMBER Alert activations in California.

TWENTYNINE PALMS HIGH SCHOOL WOODWORKING CLASS BENEFITS FROM NEW YUCCA VALLEY QUILT SHOP
The opening of a new business in Yucca Valley marks a new effort for a woman who has been supporting Twentynine Palms High School for years. Reporter Tami Roleff joins us...
For the past 5 years, Karen Howes, owner of the home-based business Mimi’s Quilting, has been selling wooden utensils made by students at 29 Palms High School at area craft shows alongside her quilts. Sales of the wooden toaster tongs, pasta spoons, oven rack pullers, large tongs, and other items have totaled more than $1000, quite an accomplishment when the utensils sell for about $3 a piece. All the proceeds raised from the sale of the woodcrafts go back to the woodworking club, which uses the funds to buy exotic woods for other projects. Starting Saturday, January 15, Morongo Basin residents and visitors can support the 29 Palms High School woodworking class by buying these wood projects in Howes’ brand new store, Mimi’s Quilt Shop, which is located next to Star Market on the highway in Yucca Valley. Still priced at $3 each, they’re quite the bargain.
