MORE DETAILS ON FATAL ATV CRASH IN LANDERS SATURDAY

We have more information on that fatal ATV crash in Landers Saturday night. The Sheriff’s Department was called at 11:43 p.m. Saturday about a missing person in the 59900 block of Applegate Way. The caller said that Jacob Harvel, 26, had been drinking and had taken Katrina Eberhardt, 29, of San Bernardino, out for a ride around the block on a 1983 Honda ATV about 8:10 p.m. and they had not returned yet. While deputies were searching the area, 911 received a call at 2:17 a.m. Sunday morning from residents who said that they could hear screaming in the 60300 block of Joshua Tree Lane . According to the California Highway Patrol, which took over the investigation, Harvel was speeding northbound on Booth Road, north of Joshua Tree Lane, with Eberhardt on the back seat behind him, when he drove off the road and collided with two 50-gallon drums filled with concrete. Both Harvel and Eberhardt were thrown from the ATV, which sustained major damage. Harvel broke both his legs and crawled toward the road where the neighbor heard him screaming. Katrina Eberhardt was pronounced deceased at the scene at 2:57 a.m. Harvel was flown to Desert Hospital in Palm Springs. Neither Jacob Harvel nor Katrina Eberhardt were wearing helmets. The CHP investigation is continuing as alcohol or drugs may be a factor in the crash.
