MEDICAL MARIJUANA INITIATIVE ON YUCCA VALLEY TOWN COUNCIL AGENDA TONIGHT

After hearing presentations from the Chamber of Commerce and receiving an update on the homeless point-in-time count, the Yucca Valley Town Council will be asked to approve the consent agenda, which includes a bequest of $50,000 from the Charles C. May Trust to be used for the animal shelter; and to reject the sole bid received for refurbishment of the community center softball infield. The main item of business is the medical marijuana citizen initiative. Managing editor Tami Roleff says a full house is expected tonight for the medical marijuana citizens’ initiative…
After certifying the number of valid signatures on the citizens’ initiative to allow medical marijuana dispensaries, (as required by law), the Council will have several options: adopt the medical marijuana dispensary initiative; call a special election for residents to vote on the citizen initiative medical marijuana dispensary ordinance; develop its own measure to be placed on the ballot with the citizen initiative measure; authorize a report on the impact of the initiative and present it at its February 17 regular meeting; or direct the Town’s ad hoc committee to continue discussions with the initiative representative to come up with a compromise ordinance that would be placed on the ballot for a special election. The final items on the agenda include the appointments of commissioners to the Planning Commission and the Park and Rec Commission. The Council will then go into closed session to discuss property negotiations, and to conference with legal counsel over four cases of existing litigation against the town from Fritz Koenig, the Best Western Hotel and Suites, and Mirage Front Properties. Tonight’s meeting will be held at 6:00 in the Yucca Room of the Yucca Valley Community Center.
