LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS JOIN IN NATIONAL DAY OF SILENCE TODAY

Today is National Day of Silence, a day held annually to protest the harassment and bullying of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered students. Student clubs at both Yucca Valley and Twentynine Palms High Schools have organized a Day of Silence, in which students—who have received permission from their parents and teachers—will not speak during the school day to honor those who have been bullied or harassed because of their sexuality. Some conservative groups and parents oppose the Day of Silence, arguing that it promotes homosexuality in schools, and they urge parents to keep their children home from school on this day.

On Tuesday, a server at a local Twentynine Palms restaurant, received a harassing note when her party paid their bill. According to a Sheriff’s report, a man who was with a group of 10 people, who are believed to be Marines, wrote the message “Go Kill Yourself” on the receipt following dinner. The server is transgender and believed the note was directed to her due to her change. The Sheriff’s Department is investigating.
