LEARN ABOUT “THE SCIENCE OF THE SEASONS” AT JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK

Not to be confused with “phrenology,” the pseudo-science of analyzing a person by feeling the bumps on his head, “phenology” is the science of seasonal biological changes, in relation to climate.  Dan Stork tells how you can learn to become a “citizen scientist” in this specialty…

Explore phenology, “the science of the seasons,” at Joshua Tree National Park in a free, one-day workshop, on Saturday, February 1, at Joshua Tree National Park headquarters in Twentynine Palms, from 1 to 5:00 p.m. After this course, you can volunteer to help the park detect the impacts of climate change by observing the seasonal activities of the park’s desert plants, from bud-burst to flowering and fruiting. Dr. Susan Mazer, a professor of plant ecology, genetics, and evolution at University of California, Santa Barbara, will lead the workshop. Bring snacks, water, sunscreen, appropriate layered clothing for the predicted temperatures, a notebook and pen. If you are interested in this opportunity, contact Josh Hoines at 760-367-5564, or at [email protected].
