DOG ATTACKS BICYCLIST IN JOSHUA TREE, IS SHOT AND KILLED BY SHERIFF’S DEPUTY

A dog was shot and killed by a Sheriff’s deputy after it attacked a bicyclist near Joshua Tree National Park Saturday afternoon. According to Sheriff’s Sergeant Derek Garvin, about 12:45 p.m., Burnley Willis was riding his bicycle on Quail Springs Road near California Avenue in Joshua Tree when a Rottweiler and a mastiff came running out from a nearby residence and started chasing him. One of the dogs bit the man, who called the Sheriff’s Department for help. According to Garvin, the responding deputy said the dogs attacked him, so he shot one three times and killed it. Garvin said the other dog ran back home. County Animal Control came and took custody of the second dog. The Sheriff’s Department is investigating.
