CHP ISSUES TICKETS FOR CELLPHONE USE IN SPECIAL ENFORCEMENT

Almost 100 drivers were ticketed in the Morongo Basin for handheld cell phone talking or texting during Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April, according to Officer Joan Griffin of the California Highway Patrol. The 95 citations written by Morongo Basin CHP officers were less than half of the number of 211 tickets written in April 2013, but more than twice as many as the 39 tickets written in March. Statewide, the percentage of drivers actively using cell phones while driving dropped to its lowest point since counting began in 2011. Cell phone citations in general have been dropping yearly from the high in 2011 of over 476,000 to just over 426,000 in 2013. The only category still increasing is for texting, which began with 2,800 in 2009 and hit over 27,000 last year. CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow said, β€œIt only takes a split second of inattention to change your life or injure or kill others. Through education and enforcement campaigns like the statewide effort this past April, we are hoping to keep the public safe by encouraging drivers to stay focused on the road and avoid all distractions while behind the wheel.”
